How do I stop "pop ups"?

I don't know much about computers, just about how to switch them on & off, check out sites such as this one etc.
Just recently, I've started to get all these "pop ups",..about 2" wide down the LHS of screen, sometimes the whole screen, sometimes the RHS of screen, some have "X" to get rid of them, but they keep coming back, and they really slow up the speed of the computer.
So, How do I stop them from "popping up"?
We have Internet explorer 9.0.26 256 bit.
Windows Vista Home Premium.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Search for Ädblock Plus" on the internet and install it. Works well. Jim

was getting popups on eBay (only). problem now solved :thumbsup:
