angle grinders in the engine bay and footwell extending

Two things -:
1/ I have a 1961 SWB and blew an engine some time ago so whilst waiting for the money for a new donk I started rebuilding (NOT restoring) the beast, taking bits off, derusting, sanding, painting etc. She is looking nice so far.


However, an engine came along and upset my itinerary. I have the guards and front off and was about to cut a smallish section of the footwell out to replace a rusted section when I got caught up in the lust of an engine.


Now, I have a going vehicle but I need to still cut out the rusted section of the footwell (it is not rusted enough to replace the whole thing). Now, how do I cut out what I need to without sparks going everywhere and setting her on fire? (she has done that twice on her own in the past)


2/ my wife has long legs and finds the passenger side too cramped. While I am cutting bits out of the footwell, I want to extend it a bit to make life easier for her (she doesn't drive it as there are 3 pedals and she only has two feet). Has anyone any experience with this?

Remove all of the seat cushions; cover all of the glass inside and out with cardboard blue-tacked in place; cover any delicate pieces with a fire proof shield, such as sheet-metal, or leather welder's apron.

Before cutting, check the surroundings for other cars, or the potential to start a fire on any flammables. Sometimes it is convenient to use a sheet-metal guard very close to the grinder, to catch the sparks and drop them onto the floor - I use an old real estate sign bent at a right-angle.

And when you have finished, vacuum, or blow the debris out of all the nooks and crannies, because if you don't it will start rusting and spread the rot,

Sabre saw might be the go. I have done one side with an angle grinder. We have thick carpet in our work trailer as we carry concrete letterboxes, so I covered everything with that. Seemed to have survived ok, nothing blew up.....

Gee how tall is your wife, I'm 6'5" and mostly leg and I find the foot wells kinda roomy... Then again my previous cars have been kinda tiny so anything would seem roomy lol

she's not like some amazon or anything, about 5' 11 or so but it's either more foot room or I lose the glove box
