TD5 coolant hose from overflow bottle to metal pipe?

Whilst changing the radiator in my D2a TD5 I noticed this pipe setup:

Doesn't look proper to me. It goes from the coolant overflow bottle to the metal pipe that seems to run around the back of the engine. In between as you can see are some strange joins/connections.

Thoughts?

it's been deEGRed and the front exhaust gas cooler has been
been removed a good idea but badly done.

Three options return to original nah.

Run a pipe from oil cooler to header tank and remove the
steel pipe at the back of the block.

Fit a blank to the oil cooler hose outlet and cut and blank
the pipe that goes to header tank just below header that what
the last D2 had.

Mine is a September 2002 build, so surprised it wasn't on this setup.

They changed over to the EU3 spec mid year. Mine is an april build and is EU3 speced. when did the EGR removal I just blanked the EGR cooler inlet from the manifold and left the cooler insitu. Much less hassle rerouting and such.

Tomorrow I'll see if I can get some blanking pieces for this to get rid of them. I figure it's less old rubber hoses to rub and leak then if they're gone.

Yep, less is good as far as potential leak sources go :) And it will neaten things a little, like a disco engine bay really needs more hoses! :D

For anyone viewing this thread in the future, the part number for the blanking cap for the oil cooler unit outlet is PYB500040. It's about GBP 40.00ish from the UK.

I just used some 3/4" (19.0mm) heater hose and a M20 stainless steel bolt with two hose clamps to block it off.

I ran around town this morning trying to locally purchase a blanking cap, but apparently no one sells such items - very surprising...


As for the coolant overflow bottle, that's a 10mm barb, so I fitted an M10 bolt into some heater hose with two hose clamps to block it off.

I searched through Microcat and cannot fit a part number for a genuine Land Rover blanking cap for this one, so I can only assume the replacement bottles don't have the hose drilled out perhaps...


On my test run this evening, no heating issues. Temperatures ranged from 87*C to 97*C whilst driving at operating temperature (according to my MadMan EMS).


I also removed the metal pipe (not sure why) and destroyed it in the process - had to be cut and bent a bit to get out (or perhaps there's a trick to it that I couldn't figure out)...

I've been looking at this issue today.
Can anyone confirm that, when an EGR cooler is removed, it's ok to blank off the water pipe that:
emerges from behind the turbo,
goes from rubber to steel piping,
passes behind the engine,
then runs under the inlet manifold,
goes back to rubber,
cools the exhaust gas (not any more),
then goes via a quite thin plastic pipe into the coolant reservoir?
Mine's been blanked off in 2 places since my egr went missing a while ago, and now I'm keen to remove all the crappy pipework.
Is the flow out of the block on the passenger side important to the cooling system?

Removing does not appear to have dire problems for the rest of the cooling. Or at least I havent heard of any.

Yes, get rid of the lot. Mines been running for a year like this no probs.
