another forum has got me thinking........should I carry a spare stub and hub for my camper trailer?

I carry wheel bearings as they suit the defender and the trailer.

I am also lucky that my stubs are bolt on unlike most camper trailers/caravans you are generally up for a new axle if you damage the bearing area.....so easy enough to change

to date my thoughts have been its a pretty heavy duty set, I have never had a wheel bearing fail therefore good preventative maintenance should see me through

is the weigh of a stub and hub worth while?

Hello,

I always carry a spare hub and set of bearings, having the hub makes for a quick easy repaire, as i find the hardest part to be is getting the inner race in and out, much easy to do that at home.

and they are not expensive.

I always carry spares as well. For the cost (bugger all) its an easy fix on the side of the road if the need ever arises. for about $40.00 for a hub, $20.00 for the bearing kit, and $6-7 for castle nuts and split pins, it's cheap insurance. I have had to do it at Aratula in the pub car park after a bearing collapsed and having them was a God send.

My camper comes with a mounted spare hub and stub axle, can just bolt on, only drawback is that it is unbraked so it is purely a temporary emergency solution.
