meow from the pump

Hi guys, my Defender 90 Td5 2006's fuel pump , when I put the key to II position at the beginning always a meow then the noise of the pump is normal. I changed the fuel filter and also cleaned the pump but the noise is identical.

Should I be worried? It's a sign that I need to change the pump?

generally means your loosing prime somwhere or the cooling section of the pump housing isnt holding fuel anymore untill the pump is running.


try it with a full tank of fuel, it the meow stops its the latter.

The noise is always the same with full tank or almost empty. Now I have full

sounds like its having to do an initial prime on startup.

does it do it if you run the engine for a minute, shut it down then restart 5 seconds later?

Had a similar problem in my Td5 a few years ago. As it got worse, I ended up removing the fuel pump . Found it was covered in black "goo" which was clogging the inlet screens and making the pump sound like a "demented mosquito".
This is an organic slime which grows in the presence of water in the fuel tank.
Suggest you might like to cut open your fuel filter and see if it has similar gunk inside.

If so, the easiest way to remove the fuel pump for inspection & cleaning is to cut a hole in the rear deck of your Defender. Mulgo make a plate which can be used to neatly fill that hole you cut.

Yes Alan, is what I did. I cutted the hole and removed the fuel pump and cleaned. I found some black :ph34r: on the filter of the pump and the tank was clean... but the noise is the same

Yes, more or less always. If I park the car for more than a cupple of hours sometimes when I turn the key the noise is ok but If I go, i switch off the car and after put in II position is always noisy

Check the relay.

There is a relay that controls the fuel pump. It is located in the relay box in the cabin below the dash.

Try swapping it for another of the same type as they can develop strange faults, e.g. making your pump suddenly fail then work again after an indeterminate time.

If you don't have a spare, buy one as you really should keep one on board to avoid being stuck in the boondocks.

If you buy one other than from Land Rover (and perhaps even if you do) check it with a multimeter to be sure it matches the wiring shown on tbe case/packing. Yes, I bought one that was wrong - created havoc till I worked that out!

Thank you for your reply, I'll try what you suggest... though my pump always works but when I put in position II generally when hot il sounds meeeeeewww... Seems like it has always air inside. I have to wait that the sound goes away to start the engine. The sound comes obviously from the pump...
