Ok, firstly I only got to drive the new V8 cruiser ute for a few K's around town, was a customers car at my work. But anyway, I was suprised to feel that it felt gutless down low compared to my isuzu 130, very noticable. I was only driving around town but taking off and accelerating up hills there was an obvious difference, out on the freeway cruising might be a different story. Made me a bit chuffed that my good old school 1984 4bd1 (with GT2260 and big ic admittely) felt heaps gruntier than the modern 4.5 V8 TDI. I am always impressed with the seemingly instant off idle max torque with absolutley zero flat spot or turbo lag anywhere, unlike the toyota that didn't seem to take off till about 1500rpm. Also good to know that I get much better fuel consumption than the big V8 diesel, yep love me isuzu landy!

If that's the latest one, it's twin turbo too, correct?

I've never driven one of the Toyo's, but was very happy with my fuel consumption compared to the 2 that we had on our Simpson trip last year.
Enjoyed pulling them out when they got bogged too ;)
You still running the same VNT control as Rovercare had fitted?

Those 4.5 TDV8 motors have a lot of problems too do they not? Yet another reason not to own a Landcruiser. :)

Yep same set up, but will get it properly tuned one day, after I get injectors cleaned, not sure the 30 psi max boost is efficient for that turbo. Anything over about 26psi dosnt seem to make much difference, pulls like a train though :)
Was the current cruiser, not sure what year or if it was twin turbo.

Twin turbo is 200 series wagon only. 76, 78 and 79 series are single turbo.

Much better oil consumption too, apparently they use heaps and when owners have complained the dealers tell them it's 'normal'.

I'm told 1 litre every 1000km is normal!

I don't know about the newer ones but if you complained, oil consumption was considered normal (as many new owners hadn't had a diesel previously it was passed off as a diesel thing). Complain more and you got a book to log your consumption, less than 1.2l/1000k's was normal and not discussed further.
The cause was known. The material used for the blocks had the same issue as heads from an earlier model 6cyl that was notorious for blowing head gaskets, along with thermal expansion issues between the block and liners.

My neighbour has a Landcruiser V8 ute. It uses no oil at all. I believe Toyota fixed the problem. It sound fantastic with a new exhaust. Nothing like the sound of a V8.

Yeah the one I'm going in doesn't use oil either. Although it did just get a brake line recall a week before we head off:eek:, crisis averted, Toyota had no replacement lines available, managed to scrounge up the bracket and arb sourced some new braided lines.:)

Lucky Vern, as it was a vibration related recall!
There's a 200 getting around here with a bigger exhaust - it does sound intoxicating.
Not a whole lot of go though. The p38 would lick it I reckon. Though maybe not towing a 30ft caravan up a long hill.
