Is anyone running a full set LED brake, tail, indicator and parker lights on an older Defender, County or 110? I like me some LEDs.
These seem to always be up on ebay:

I like the look of the clear lens type and I assume they are legal as long as they illuminate the correct colour.
Not fussed about losing the trailer indicator light on the dash. I'm not sure it has ever worked any way.

As long as you add a ballast, or change the flasher unit[appears to come with one anyway] (or aparently 'mod' the flasher unit. . was a thread on here about how to somwhere) theorheticly if the flasher unit is LED specific then the trailer light should still work the same.? maybe. . . . .
though if your trailer is running LED's then it wont work. my Trailer has LED's and there isnt enough load to trigger the Trailer light. doesnt bother me though. as long as I know they work. which i check before each use. . . the orange ones wont stay on. . seem to flash around a lot ;)

I woudl be interested to see the quality if you get theese, been considering a set myself.

Been eyeing off those for a while now...
Our S2a project car (that has funding!) is in need of a new set of these lights - I'm tempted to take the existing ones off the 110 and put them on the S2a (not original, I know!), and get the LED ones for the 110.
My trailer light flashes with my indicators all the time already, as I have incandescent bulb in my bullbar indicator lights. On the wish list is a set of LED lights to go in there as well...

I have that exact set on my Puma. Works like a bomb, you don't even realise how bright they are until you start seeing the indicators reflected off the traffic at night. ;)
Very easy to install - 15 min tops.

Been running a set of the coloured LED ones since just before Xmas, certainly put the originals to shame.

I have looked at these as well. Think l will go clear.
I reckon they are well priced.....
And l like that one can retain the 'factory' look with this particular upgrade.

I must confess I have only changed my rear ones on both cars
The front ones are the standard clear ones. Manly did this because can't see the front ones anyway due to the ARB Bull Bar. Saved a bit on cost :-)

I've been using the RDX brand LED lights on my County. The best thing is they are totally sealed, so no more dusty, wet lenses.

Just got the shipping advice in my inbox :D
I ordered the clear type as we've replaced at least half a dozen due to fading lenses over the years.

Probably a stupid question, but does the round LED reverse light fit the bracket on the 110 that is rectangular as standard?

I put the credit card details in after reading this post. Whoops.

.
Not really but not difficult to change
The picture is my 90 is a 95 model so had the rectangle fog and reversing lights. But was changed to make it look newer.
Have to drill a couple of holes for the bolts on the housing of the round ones but apart from that. Yeah they go over the old ones. LED are easier to fit as with the gen ones you had to also drill a bigger hole for the bulb mounting ( Like on the brake and indicator lights ) but with the led you don't need to do that.
I have a round LED revering one for my 98 110 ( from the factory it does not have a fog light ). Just got to get round to changing it over from the rectangle one.

Well, I have received and installed the kit. They look great, but I've got a couple of issues that I'm hoping others who have attempted this might be able to help out with.
Firstly, I got the Wipac 73mm all-clear lights + LED flasher from the link posted below. Out of the box, they are plugged to suit later models so I carefully went over each one with a multi before snipping the new-type plug and replacing with bullet connectors.
I haven't yet replaced the side lights but intend on doing so once the issues below are sorted out.
Indicators: I have read in other threads that the shared dash indicator light is cause of the first problem that I had. The right indicator was briefly lighting when the left was on. Solved temporarily by removing the globe in the dash. Will implement a more permanent fix later.
Brake/tail lights: Rather bizarre one - the dash fog lamp indicator comes on when I put my foot on the brake. The county doesn't even have a fog lamp so I'm very curious what might be completing that circuit.
Parker lights: These work just fine until the headlights-proper are turned on. Then, either the right parker light goes out or the headlight indicator bulb in the dash blows. After the bulb blows, all exterior lights work fine.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thinking about this upgrade myself, are the units just as big as the standard lights? I'm thinking about using them with the headlight and rear light protection kits. I read that if you use LED from the factory that they will not work with rear light protection.
Thanks.

As far as I'm aware they are the same size. However I didn't measure them.

I used 77mm Wipac Units. On the outside, they are precisely the same size as the originals (like my avatar). The only differences are the screw positions and that the rear of the LED units is flat as there is no bulb chamber.

So with regards to these Wipac units, I guess I can go in stages? First park lights, then brake lights, then back up and red marker lights and I leave the turn signals for last as they require the blinker unit. Or is it better to have it all done in one go?
I noticed that Wipac does not have any units to replace the lights found on the side of the wing, has anyone replaced those with units of the same appearance?

Sure, I installed mine over the course of a few days. No reason why it couldn't be a few months. If money is tight, it may be more cost effective to save up and buy the complete set at once instead of buying in stages.
You may not need the flasher unit if you are willing to tinker with the one you already have. Dervish posted an excellent thread on LED fitment (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/185099-led-defender-rear-lights-indicators-flasher-unit-5.html). It includes a post or two on how to simply snip one of the pins off of the IC inside the flasher unit in order to bypass the fast flash issue. It also lists exactly what he did for the side indicators - all with photos.
I recommend thoroughly searching and reading everything you can find about LED position lights that you can on this forum. There are a few things to be aware of, especially when fitting to an older vehicle. Nothing you can't manage but things that can be frustrating if you don't know about them beforehand.
Just out of interest, what vehicle are you putting them on? From memory, the Puma may already have LED side indicators.

Hi Mammalalien,
Thanks for the insights, they are certainly helpful.
My Puma is a MY11 and as far as I can see, he still uses bulbs. Unfortunately one of my park lights in front stopped working and trying to find a bulb in these parts that doesn't cost an arm and a leg is quite a chore hence the thoughts of going LED so I can just focus on other stuff that needs attention. :)

No worries :)
In that case, your installation should be a whole lot simpler than mine. The LED's come pre-wired with standard plugs used on all of the newer vehicles so swapping takes only as long as unscrewing then rescrewing the fittings.

Coolness!
Thanks!
At least now I can plan the incremental upgrades. Still haven't found a clean solution for the lights on the side of the wing though. They're a smaller, leaner rectangle than what Dervish has. So I guess I can keep these in bulb form until someone finds or makes a suitable replacement?

Hello all, I'm fairly new to this, so if I get it wrong, please set me straight! I'm re-assembling my 1985 County (4BD1T 598000km) and want to use all LED'S. Has anyone found out if these Land Rover Defender Wipac 73mm LED Position Light SET With Relay MPSLEDSET4 | eBay are covered by an ADR number? I don't doubt they are excellent, and do the job 100%, but practical reallity means nothing in Australia if the paper work is not done!! I saw the pictures of them on the back of the 90, and they look the part. I did get some Hella units that were stop, tail and indicator all in one, and the same size, but they were about $250 for the pair, and no good for the front. Thanks in advance! This forum has an unbelievable amount of info on it, and I'm researching to intercool the County soon, as well, so I'm reading all that as well. Thanks, Rob.

A quick search indicates that they are ECE compliant for the task. My hazy memory is telling me that ECE compliance means automatic ADR compliance for most automotive lighting, but I'm not going on record as saying that. Probably not as hard and fast of an answer as you'd want, but at least you've got a place to start researching.

I fitted RDX LED replacement lights to my 98 Defender recently. They are E marked which is adequate to meet ADR standards. Mine were supplied with an adjustable flasher unit, and I fitted them in a very short time. The plugs are not connected as different models have different polarity, but you only need to plug one in to check. If it doesn't work it is easy to remove and correct the polarity without damage to the LED.
I also want to know about the side repeaters, as they are somewhat brittle and I am worried if I force them they will snap.

I used cheapo side repeaters from Super Cheap Auto:
SCA Side Marker Lamp - 8 LED, Amber - Supercheap Auto Australia (http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/SCA-Side-Marker-Lamp-8-LED-Amber.aspx?pid=166518#Cross)
The page says ADR approved.

They are well and truly bright enough. Nothing like the form factor of the original units but that's not a problem for me. They look fine IMO.
Note, on the County at least, the side repeaters only have an active lead and earth to the wing though their metal housing.
The process:
Removed the old lens, removed the globe, drilled out the rivets, removed the unit, put a peg on the wire and snipped it, marked and drilled one new hole, added the first rivet to hold the new base in place, stripped, soldered and heat-shrunk the active lead, poked the earth through the second rivet hole, riveted it in place to secure the fitting and earth lead, snap LED body into place.
FYI, there are some very similar Narva units that SuperCheap and Repco also stock.

I need to replace the old rectangular reversing light on the 130, it's falling apart and just blew another globe (and the globe holder is barely holding together)
How are the round Wipac LED versions holding up, and are they appreciably brighter than the original ?
I've been through the Narva and Hella catalogues and there really isn't anything suitable, they are all too large.....

I have seen LED Autolamps 80WM used for 130/110 reverse lights before. They aren't as nice to look at as the Wipacs though.
