View Full Version : Looking for options on what colour to paint Perentie can't decide...

Thought I'd let people through some other opinions at me as I can't decide on what colour to paint Perentie and many minds are better than one, just a bit of fun...
I'm thinking either satin black with the old Chrysler orange like on the pacers as highlights such as grill, headlight surrounds ect
Or
That American army tan colour
Throw some ideas of what you'd do at me as I really can't decide...

The tan would look awesome. Save having to make the bodywork too perfect before painting too.
With black highlights and some military hardware attached (maybe the cars nickname stencilled onto the side in black, military style) it would look pretty badass i reckon.

If you don't like Auscam (and why wouldn't you), why not Olive Drab?
DirtyDog
10th May 2014, 08:41 PM
Yeah i really like the tan idea and some stenciling. I'll be honest auscam isn't really my thing personally, to me it looks a bit tacky, I understand a lot of people on here are history/military buff collector type people and that's absolutely fine, but it just isn't personally my thing and all my army mates would laugh at me, you get the whole pretend soldier thing going on... If im going to spend the money and time on it, painting etc i want people to go wow checkout that land rover and olive drab doesn't really do that...

The colour your looking for is FDE (flat dark earth).
It's military without being camo or OD green.
I'll be painting my 130 that colour with black chequer plate over the top.
You will need to visit a hobby shop to get some model paint, prime and paint a "sample" plate and get it "eye" matched.
I have not been able to find any codes for it.

Thanks Cliffy if you go on this site they have a heap of different American military tans and others they've used on various vehicles and other things over the years with the codes for different brands ect, worth a look anyway...
I'm sure i was looking at an even better site the other day, i forgot to bookmark it, ill see if i can find it...
I'm looking at the modern desert one but just a tiny, tiny bit darker to make it seem more vivid and the black highlights really stand out...

These are the standard colours. I reckon that 3 cans of Brown would cover the whole exterior.

hahaha Sorry I Should of pointed out I plan on building a very special and different perentie project with quite a large budget and a full body off nut and bolt restoration/custom project not some dodgy backyard job... My brother in law owns a paint and body shop so it will be sprayed by him in a booth ect and look like a factory paint job. I'm not going out to the shed with a couple of cans of spray paint. haha
This is my Audi he painted he's pretty good (excuse the mess we were moving workshops at the time)

Haha, should HAVE pointed out that Protec also sell that same paint in 1lt, 4lt and 20lt cans for use in spray guns. If you don't like the shade of the Cam Brown (which is the Tan colour of the 3 already on your vehicle), then Protec also have a lighter sand colour called Light Tan which is part of the Desert Cam scheme used on the vehicles sent to A'stan and other sandy places.
If you don't like the Satin finish of the Cam colours, Protec will also be able to colour match any of the Camoflage colours in high gloss single pack or two pack. Have you seen "Armygeddon"? It's been in a few colour schemes over the years, painted in Protec gloss two-pack, and is currently in the two shades of Cam Brown and Light Tan.

Its on airbags can be adjusted to any height you like for rough roads, curbs ect but still left to look good (low) when not needed. The audi S8 comes from factory with 20" wheels its german class not a commodore ;):D come on guys where in 2014 not the 60's low with big wheels looks the goods...
Black and orange look crazy good together:

Relax there's plenty of plain jane land rovers in white, yellow, green and auscam to go around. I just want something a bit different and a nice high quality build, its a bit boring everyone having the same vehicle, I bet when its finished its one of the nicest land rovers in Aus...
another example of black and orange...

So you are ditching the ragtop? It will look like a pig with a gold tooth otherwise.

Sorry Deejay I thought you were taking the Mickey in your post with the spray cans, I didn't know you meant just the colour. That's why I was laughing wasn't being a asshole...
I will be ditching auscam rag top and either making a single cab or having a colour matched soft-top made up, if I keep soft-top it will only be used when its needed, but probably learning towards single cab as the it would get hot under the sun all the time...

Just make sure your brother researches the paint before stripping the car.
It cannot be sanded except under certain conditions:
1. in a proper sanding booth
2. the person doing the sanding is in full safety gear:
100% body coverage suit and
positive pressure, filtered air supply.
the dust is deadly and the toxic part can be absorbed through skin exposure as well as breathing. it even gets absorbed through your eyes!
The safest way to remove the paint is paint stripper.

When I purchased mine it was painted in cam black all over.It looked very intimidating.Where ever I stopped people were expecting 6 heavily armed men in black to jump out of the black. The optical effect of being all black made the vehicle look bigger than it is.

I understand the primer is some chromate nasty, but to re-topcoat can it be rubbed back?

Something bright would be good.
Mind you, it needs to be balanced.

Leyland yellow? I like this thread, I want to do something similar. Paint a perentie in a colour that hints at its military heritage but is not auscam (can't be driving a camo car to work people will laugh at me lol). And dress it up a little.
I like the idea of an understated colour like tan or mustard, or even dark green. Give it an elegant look that doesn't overstate mods to the vehicle you know?
