Gday Folks... Absolutely Love the G4 Orange.

Is this strictly a G4 Build colour only ?

Any Punters painting they're personal D2's or D3's in this colour code ?

Anyone looked into Vinyl wraps ? Durable off road Vinyl ?

Theres a pretty good range of heavy Durable paint on the market also.

I do a lot of exploratory off road driving. The older the trail or track the scrubbier and narrower it is.

And I'm not prepared to hold back any more. . . Bugger it !!

Anyone got any advice on maintaining a respectable finish on a vehicle that gets flogged through the bush ?

I saw a U.S.A D3 with a quarter inch of body liner sprayed over the whole vehicle. A bit excessive but didn't look too bad.

Any painters on the forum in the know ?

Cheers guys. Joel

p.s My 08 D3 is Gloss black. the worst for scratches

Yes, this is a strictly G4 colour. But anything is possible these days...... ..

G4 colour is Tangiers Orange. It was only available on the G4 vehicles for the 03, 06 and 09 events and a few 'special edition' D2's in the UK after the first event in 2003.

134 were built for the 2006 event, I have one of the 35 Range Rover Sports

Actually...

I've got a nagging feeling, Tangers Orange was available as an off-the-shelf colour in 02/03 or there abouts. Certainly, you could get the limited edition D2 in Orange.

Little bit of trivia: The '09 cars were all manufactured in black and then resprayed.

Some of the recce cars were and at least one of them was silver when its custodian left it in the Gaydon car park to go on holiday ;)

The D3's built for the actual challenge were all orange from the factory. Friends have one, it's definitely not black underneath (they've recently had most of one side replaced after a minor altercation with a truck). The ones sent out here for the selections are also orange from the factory. I think it was the Sport's & full fats that were black as well

Great bit of info there guys.

So does anybody know how many G4 D3's there are in Australia ?

I have also thought about a wrap for my D3, starting to get a lot of bush rash down the sides. I think so far mist of it is polish able but it's okay a matter of time. I have also toyed with the G4 orange for the wrap.

Anyone done the wrap? And what did you pay?

Hi Gentleman

I know from experience that from about early 2000 my Father had been trying to order a Tangers Orange D2 & Defender and was told by Landrover Australia he could have any other colour with the exception a Tangers Orange.

He could order them from the homeland but there was a issue back then with supply when it arrived to Australia.

But as Mike knows he managed to get a 2007 built Defender which his Dealer had manage to source while my Father was in the homeland on the
Landrover Experience Training at the Jungle Track.

Cheers

Hi

There was a D3 in Melbourne with all the labels removed and a
Defender in Adelaide.
RRS in Melbourne.
I have seen a D2 in Australia a few years ago but I think it was only on holidays.

Hi Andrew,

I'm not convinced there's any benefit to wrapping a 4wd. We wrap the rally car fairly regularly and whilst it operates in harsher conditions it is fairly similar to a 4wd.

We find that the vinyl gets damaged at least as easily as paint, particularly with stone chips. When the vinyl gets chipped or scratched it has to be replaced - scratches don't buff out. This works well on the rally car as we design it so small sections can be replaced but if you wrapped your Disco you would need to replace complete panels and that would get expensive.

You would probably be looking at a ballpark figure of around $5k for the Disco, quite possibly more for a good job. There's probably at least $3k in vinyl for starters and a good job is very labour intensive to get the fiddly bits right - around door handles, grilles, etc.

I think a better solution is get a good detail every year or so then if you're really worried protect the high wear areas like the rear wheel arches with something like clear vinyl or plasti-dip.

If you want to look in to it further, I can recommend a wrapper in Sydney or better still a very good detailer. Both these guys do work for JRA and we use them on the rally car as well.

Cheers,
Jon

Hi Andrew

The other alternative is to use a product called Proshield which is a clear film about 1.5mm thick you install over your paint colour. Still quite expensive.

Which a number of trucking companies are using to protect their trucks from minor stone chips.

Only thing is to not get to close to the protective layer with the high pressure cleaner when washing your pride and joy.

Cheers

That Video of them wrapping it in G4 orange is great.

However i believe your right jon3950 , it's a massively 'high detail' laborious job for a person thinking about DYI and not financially viable to replace as often as it would break. Rally aye jon ? I bet thats great fun.

I asked in my initial post, whether there was research or development of 4X4 Heavy Duty Vinyls ? (i guess not)

SteveTd5 i believe any gloss solutions would end up looking quite ordinary quite fast.

Its seems to me that a textured 2 part paint job, is going to be the most professional solution. More than likely with a dull - matte - finish.

Oh by the way i did actually spot a G4 coloured D3 out the front of the ARB store in Alice Springs about 3 weeks ago. it had a lot of travel gear all over it. and a Kayak too i'm fairly sure. No idea who's it was.:banana::banana::banana::banana::banan a::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: :banana::banana:

There are 2 D3's, both sent over for the selections stage for the 09 event, so they're 2008 SE's without the roofrack lights of the UK cars. They're also SE spec, as opposed to the HSE's used on the event. Both have recently changed hands, one is still fully decal'd up, the other one isn't as Robert Pepper chose to strip them off. He sold his very recently, replacing it with a Ranger wrapped in orange vinyl.

There are 2 Defender 110's also sent over for the selections, one is in Melbourne, the other (as Steve TD5 mentioned ;) ) is in South Australia. I've seen the Melbourne one a couple of times, think I scared him to death when I pulled alongside in mine, he looked a bit shocked :D There was a 130 Quadtec bodied Defender from 08 over in NZ, a UK car that a chap sent there to his holiday home (so I'm told by its previous owner). Said same chap also has a Sport which he uses for overseas trips, it was here last year for a month or so.

And then there's my RRS, one of the 35 Sport's built which I've owned since it was released from Land Rover in 2008/9. I brought it with me when we emigrated here in 2011. It's a 2005 car, from the 2006 event so it's a 4.4 V8 as opposed to the diesels of the 09 event and was used in Thailand & Laos by the Aussie competitor Alina McMaster. I have all the certificates and history from LR that came with it, I just don't have all the bits the rest came with when they were released in 2007, as mine spent 2 years as a promo car with another Sport, the one used in all the promo photos for the 09 event. It lost all the spare wheels, camping gear, kayak, bike, fuel cans, even the MTR's etc as it went through the dealership chain I bought it from. By the time we got it the dealer's had fitted normal (very cheap Taiwanese ditch finder) tyres, which I replaced with Pirelli ATR's almost immediately.

There's long been a rumour in the G4 club that there's another of the 2006 Sport's permanently here in Oz, but no one has ever seen it or claimed ownership. Certainly there's one of the RHD Sport's shown as 'exported' on the DVLA website (as well as mine), but it's never turned up. A group of them came over for a tour last year, I was back in the UK at the time

Mine has always been my everyday car and has just over 100,000 miles on it now (bought it with 7k I think). I don't intend selling it, I do occasionally think of replacing it with a new Disco or Sport, but then I've always liked the fact it's so different. It also hasn't (touch wood) given me any trouble but if it did, I'd just fix it.

Yes, I'm also a bit of a nerd with my car

No hands free in your RRS Mike? All too easy to get caught using your mobile while driving around places like White street. :p

I'll have to try & remember to ask the guys when up at Gaydon next but at the time, I remember comments about the work & cost involved with respraying them. :)

The recce cars and some of the Sports / full fats weren't orange off the line, but unless they stripped the event D3's to a bare shell before painting them then it must've been done on the line. Mate's car is orange in the engine bay, under the carpets etc. All looks completely factory, same as mine.

Judo, yes it does have H/F. Never call anyone or take a call without it. Rarely on White Street anymore, you must've seen me this morning ?

Yeah I walked outside to go to work and you were stopped in traffic. Hard to miss a good looking RR like yours! If you ever get a random wave on White St, it's probably me. (I didn't wave, but I will next time...)

I know the previous owner of that car, it's a good one. I think Nene Overpriced sold it last time as well.
