Sleeping in a 101.

Ok, was going to start a thread about this when I built my platform, but thought there'd be little interest so didn't.. Having seen GG's thread going off in a different direction, perhaps I was wrong!! So here is the place to post where you sleep in your 101's! Mods, if it suits to move the last few threads from Toms thread to here, no worries. Ok, a 101 GS is 1800mm wide (outside to outside).. so I deemed it wide enough to sleep across.. but only just. I've bought a Clarke Rubber mattress which is 1850 long, 1500 wide (from memory) and 100mm deep. I've made a bed frame that drops between the two longer tray sides (approx 1720mm from memory). I used 50x50x3 angle on the sides with some lightweight 50x50 RHS to go between the angles. This formed a platform which would carry the 1/2" ply bed. On the outer edge of the angle (the edge that's flush with the canvas) I welded upright two pieces of flat sheet 2mm thick and 100mm tall... This is to locate the mattress. My frame has a couple of cut outs so it sits up tight to the back of the seat bulkheads.. (No spare wheel in there, and the battery box is also no longer there). This brings the rear most edge of the bed about 100mm in front of the wheel arches.. giving plenty of room for other camping gear, along with loads of space under the bed. I'm 6' tall and had no issues sleeping stretched out for the 10 days in the Flinders. Here's a pic of the underside framework. :)

And here's a close up of the ply, and the upright at each end which holds the mattress in place. With all the bedding in place and the mozi net down its cozy as!!! :D

We sleep the other way as I like to stretch out. A standard queen sized mattress fits perfectly across the back, but is a bit long. 2 single mattresses are a bit wide. I'd like to get 2 custom mattresses made that fit in it. I just have some ply sheets holding them up with a basic timber frame holding it up, and I pull them out when I'm not camping in it.

All the other camping stuff goes in the Sankey trailer, so only need to have the bed in there. The stove slides out from the drivers side, and we keep our clothes opposite that under the bed.

Quick, simple and comfortable.

Our platform is permanently in the 101, nice big queen size, though can be removed through the side if needed. There is enough room at the back for the fridge to sit on the floor in transit. Underneath we have roller boxes which fit under beds which work quite well for storing camping stuff, they come out the bottom side door. The length is used for the tarp poles.

This is a quick overnighter, not a very good pic but you get the drift ;)

All you need is a small fireplace to heat the interior.

I did hear about that.. Vehicle fires are never good.. Glad you caught it! I can see that Herc's canvas tilt is made by the same people as Gus's tilt was.. Wish I'd had mine made there... Beautifully made. Not too much of a drama tho as it'll be going hard top within the year. :)

Yes our canvas guy does a really good job, however he didn't do all of 'hercs' canvas, just redid the roof and added some bits to keep the flapping noise down.

A battery shorted out that was sitting next to the fridge. It now has a fuse on it. The fridge was still working in that shot even though the wire was nearly bare.
