View Full Version : Need a favour - test drive of a 110 Perentie

So, with the L322 going to be sold, SWMBO wants a manual something or other that is a bit different. I want something with no friggin electronics in it. She has always liked Defenders, and we almost bought a 90 for her at one stage.
So, being the **** stirrer that I am, I suggested a Perentie - as a bit of a joke, but to my amazement, she said she would like to test drive one...:)
Now, I'm not sure after she has, that she will want one, but I live in hope. If I keep telling her how slow and noisy they are, she might be ok by the time she drives one (in my dreams)
So, has anyone in the Melbourne area, or even further out got one they would let my Missus and myself take for a drive?
I know where there is a 6x6 but that is out unfortunately - tried that and failed...:D
If she likes it (big if) she would require power steering, which is no biggy, and she also wants cruise control (again no biggy).
So, anyone out there able to help? Payment can be arranged if needed, either in fuel or beer.:)
Cheers - Gav.

tell her to take a drive in a county or a defender.
they are basically the same but dont let her pick 5th gear.
then ask her to imagine it as a soft top.

If she doesn't mind the 101 then you're in with a chance, softtop noises can't be that different, probably not as sweet as the V8 but probably not as busy. My Defender is off the road ATM, can't help but I am confident there will be a few 110's around.

I wouldn't say she is happy with the 101 - certainly not as a daily driver, but there is more to that than just the noise.
By the sounds of it I can extend my request to an Isuzu County, but ideally I'd still like her to see exactly how a Perentie looks straight out of the auctions, although I think I will have a paint job to add to my list as she doesn't like the Camo. I'm sure that will grow on her though...:D
It is all still a long shot, but worth a try.:)

Lucky you, I can't get mine to STOP talking about Cammo.... :p
And no, dear, if you're reading this, I will NOT be painting the rangie camouflage
Good luck with it Gav :)

Having bought a FFR, I can pretty safely say that it is not in any way a daily driver that suits city living (I am assuming you are not living on a farm or something).
They are noisy, slow and primitive. You can't leave them anywhere with anything in them, as they are un-lockable. The turning circle is horrible. Idling at stoplights, everything rattles.
If you can convince your missus to drive one of these on a daily basis I'll eat my hat.
They are brilliant at what they were designed for, but city living is not part of their repertoire.
Hmmm - that sounds quite negative, but having owned one, that's my conclusion from Mrs Spud's reactions and day to day living with one.
Cheers

Stay tuned and look for a good recipe for that hat...:D
We're not in the city, but just in a town. It won't have to do the city traffic thing each morning, but yes, I think I'm being a bit hopeful, but also - you haven't met my wife. She rides a motor bike almost every day to and from work - no matter what the weather. She hates all the 'normal' cars out there - you should hear her when she has to drive try Commodore....:D
Mind you, if she could get in and out of the 101 easier, and it had power steering, I probably wouldn't be able to keep her out of it...

I've been daily driving mine for a month, and is no worse than my County, and I have increased my commute from one day/40 minutes total to 5 days an hour a day, in heavy Sydney peak hour traffic. It is far better than my IIa for peak hour traffic.
The lack of security is a bit annoying but I have never had door tops on my Series so am used to not leaving anything lying around. Makes for a clean interior :)

Having owned & sold 2 civilian Isuzu wagons & spent about $500 on sound deadening on the second one, I say you are 100% spot on. In my experience, they are not a family touring or city vehicle. Some highlights were having to turn the motor off to order Macca's drive thru & setting off car alarms in car parks with - I guess- the vibrations. That said, they are a great vehicle for 4w'ding. They would have been perfect for the Army.
And yes, a bit addictive as I bought one again :wallbash:
