View Full Version : Deep cycle batteries and dual batt systems.

I've had a deep cycle battery in my disco as the 2nd battery for i guess just over 12 months and i think it killed it, removed and put on the charger and although it shows it has some charge its not enough to power an LED light strip.
So my question is will a standard type dual battery system be detrimental to the life span of a deep cycle battery and how best to keep the battery when used infrequently ?

I use a standard voltage sensing relay for my dual battery set up and have had no problems with deep cycle batteries in a disco and a s111 the series deep cycle has been in it for over 6 years and still runs the fridge for a couple of days when fully charged:)

Hi loanrangie and you have to look at a number of factors to try to determine why a given battery has prematurely failed.

The most common causes of an early demise of a battery is not maintaining the battery in a fully charged state while it is not being used, and overly discharging the battery.

In the first instance, leaving a battery in a medium to low state of charge for long periods usually stuffs the battery.

In the second instance, some batteries can be flattened time after time and it has little to no effect. Optima batteries can tolerate this sort of abuse.

Most other batteries, over discharging them just a few time can have a detrimental effect on their longevity and some batteries can be destroyed after just one single over discharge event.

Do you know if you have at anytime discharged the battery down to a flat state?

BTW, I think you have a D1 and if so, then your alternator is operating at a voltage level that will guaranty to keep all your batteries in a top state of charge.

The only thing that can cause low voltage at your auxiliary battery is the use of thin wiring between your cranking battery and your auxiliary battery.

Have you monitored if your dual battery system has been keeping your second battery charged?
Might also be a silly question, but is your deep cycle sealed or does it need to be topped up?

Thanks Tim, battery has been kept in the Disco connected via a piranha 100amp system so has been getting constant charge.
BUT , i know i did have some issues with power to injection pump solenoid due to spider failure so i may have disconnected the power lead to the isolator at some stage plus vehicle sat for 9 weeks after i did a cylinder head.

Its a sealed 75AH battery that was kindly donated by another forum member ex UPS so may have been on borrowed time.

Hi justinpeter and welcome aboard.

:welcome:

As suggested, try starting a thread in the D3/D4/RRS section.

Removed battery from car and put on charger overnight and i noticed this morning that the leds on the charger are going from red to orange then back to red, is it possible to resurrect a battery or is it toast ?
Will need a replacement for next weekend as wifey wont be pleased camping without light :rocket: .

Hi loanrangie, leave the battery to settle today, then give it another charge over night.

Tomorrow, apply a small load of around 3 to 5 amps for an hour and measure the voltage. This is roughly a 5% load on a 100Ah battery.

A fully charged battery, able to hold it’s charge and with the load still connected, should have a voltage reading of no less than 12.5v after an hour of discharging with that small load.

If the battery is stuffed, the voltage will quickly drop to 12.3v or lower.

This would indicate the battery is no long able to hold a charge and time to replace it.

With the load attached, the chart below will give you an idea of what you should be seeing.

I have used a couple of ex UPS batteries with various degrees of success. A couple of points:

As you said the battery may have been on its last legs, some UPS applications will turn off the load when the power goes out, many will just run till they're flat hoping the power comes back, this will cause them to degrade, thus scheduled replacements.

I've been told as the batteries are designed for fixed installation, the vibration in a 4WD can kill them, this might have contributed to the failure also.

I'm using another repurposed battery at the moment, the way I look at it, if it's free I'm not going to be heartbroken if it fails like I would an expensive high quality battery.
