uhf install

I'm looking for the best UHF radio (in car) and the best location to put it in a discovery 2
I don't want it to be clearly visible from outside - am looking at the ones with all buttons on the handpiece
Any ideas/comments would be appreciated

Essentially, you have 3 options.

1) Under the drivers seat

2) Attached to the centre roof console.

3) Depending on your intended use, maybe consider a hand-held.


Sticking with option 1 & 2 for now, either location is easy to wire to. Under the seat, you just run the wires along under the transmission tunnel cover.

If you go for the roof option, up the A pillar, across the windscreen in the gap at the front of the roof lining, and then to your radio.


Obviously, the most "covert" location is under the seat, but remember, if you leave your antenna base on, then it is a bit of a give away anyway...

Try getting a remote uhf , then you can install the radio under the dash inside the panel space where the fuse box is and run your remote mike to fit on the side of the console out sight also fit a speaker under the drivers seat

I have been looking at this for my D1

But I am started to think about just putting a hand held in my car.

I have a hand held in my work car and found it to be just as good as a built in unit. Reason I have a hand held is I travel a lot in the outback and when in the NT and far North qld I am in Hire cars so I can take it with me.

After all, all I ever need a UHF for is to talk to people within a max of about 5k's. Like when you are off roading.

I do recommend the remote head UHF units (ones with the controls on the hand piece). Any of the established brands will work well, but Icom are generally considered the best followed GME and Uniden. The transceiver box for these units can be neatly fitted on the inside of the drop down panel under the steering wheel and the hand set on the front of the coin tray.

I fitted a uniden remote UHF last year there and have had no problems at all. Following thread describes my install and has a couple of pics.

Put my UHF in much the same as your install. Same place for base, I put a speaker mounted hanging down under the kick panel facing towards driver. Works great. The hand piece is on the ash tray like yours. I swapped the coin and ash tray over so the hand piece is on the left hand side. I found the cord was dangling against my left knee which was annoying.

I have a small Uniden unit which I have wedged between the transmission tunnel and the Drivers seat. Been there for 18 months now. Never moved. Picked up a power feed from under the seat. Wiring there for electric seats but mine doesn't have them. Antenna cable runs under the centre console and through firewall to engine bay. I did have to fit an external speaker as the carpet and seat blocked the sound from the speaker.
