View Full Version : Running odd wheels on a D3 as emergency spare

I am looking at getting a second spare wheel for our D3 to take on longer journeys having recently had a puncture while heading inland and feeling somewhat vulnerable as no one away from the coast stocks 255 60 18 AT or highway tyres for that matter!
I haven't had any joy sourcing a matching 5V pattern alloy second hand but can get my hands on a different pattern ex D3 alloy wheel.
My question is: Other than looking odd, would odd wheels on an axle cause any problems with the car, as I had heard of some vehicles going into 'limp home mode' if odd wheels were detected.
Any advice gratefully received.

Same Rim size or same overall diameter is fine.

Pome,
I have a spare rim which you are welcome to borrow (you would not be the first) if you have a specific trip in mind.
Cheers.

Not sure about limp home mode but don't do it permanently on any car as I believe the different sizes cause the diff to wear out prematurely. It is basically constantly going around a corner, due to different overall heights hence diameters hence circumferences.

Thanks everyone for your responses and offers. I have attached a picture of one of our wheels below on the off chance that someone does have one of these surplus to requirements, if so please contact me.

Hello Warrick, I have just bought a D3 with a set of 5 17" rims and a spare set of 4 18" with tyres. The spare set are the same as yours and surplus to my requirements. I'm ready to part with the whole set if you are interested. I am in Darwin.

The last remote trip i took a tyre with no rim,air compresser and plugs.
My tyres are pretty new LT's,so took the chance.
i also have a spare 18" tyre and rim, same as yours if you want to borrow it.
