Hey guys just a question on my lpg mixer, I have a landi 80se mixer in my 96 d1 and fitted in 1997 by a previous owner. Now apart from having the ten year check in 2008 the gas system hasn't had any maintenance. Still runs okay but I suspect it could get better milage (220-250 kms per 63l). I talked to an lpg fitter and he said the landi mixer wasn't much good and mixers should be replaced every five years anyway. So my question is, is this true and if so what would be a good mixer to replace it with?

Just a note, you're talking about a LPG converter which converts high pressure liquid to low pressure vapour using water heating. A LPG mixer mixes two substances together, namely gas and air, and is found on the engine air intake side.

Anyway, replacing a converter on some arbitrary age limit isn't really appropriate, checking the unit for water leaks, gas leaks and perished diaphragms is a better indicator of condition. Also, if a converter is sufficiently stuffed to affect the consumption it usually starts by being difficult in starting and idling. Consumption depends on a large range of factors from spark plugs, timing, vacuum advance, camshaft wear, mixture setting etc etc.

As for a replacement, it depends on what your local gas fitter supports. No point purchasing one he doesn't like. I use Zavoli myself, on all the 3.9 V8s.

Cheers thanks for that beeutey, changed my leads plugs dizzy cap and rotor button last service so I'm pretty confident my ignition system is okay. Does that gas consumption sound normal to you? I am running big rubber though (33's) and she has done some kms (370+)

It sounds a little high to me, unless you're doing city driving. Then it's similar to what I get.
You should be using a little more gas than petrol.
What's the consumption like on petrol?
Since putting the gas on my 3.5 V8 back in '92, I've replaced the converter twice (done about 200,000km). They fill up with a wax that is contained in the gas.

Every 12 months I tend to pull the vaporiser apart and clean out the wax.

I put a new diaphragm kit in my Landi SE81c converter.

In my case, yes, because the diaphragm had a pinhole in it.

But my post was really to say that one can buy a kit to service the converter.

I was going to replace the converter with an OMVL R90E two stage converter that I bought. I never did install it. I changed to an injected gas system. I should sell off the old venturi system.
