Been trying to find someone to sell me a 1.6 T Tirfor, it seems the big companies don't monitor their emails. Know any good vendors?
Or, a good quality alternative, not a Chinese thing made out of recycled Toyota's .

I had the same problem so I headed to eBay and Gumtree. I got lucky last week on Gumtree and picked up an unused T516 in as-new condition. There are also a few on eBay. I just kept an eye on it until one came up nearby.

Yes I saw one on gum tree, but it screamed " stolen" so did not pursue.
Can I ask what you paid in the end for a new one. I hope mine will still be unused in 10 years time!

Whaaat??? I reckon pulling out the gear is half the fun - as long as it gets you out of said bind. :)

300 from a retired couple who travelled around Aust with it but never needed it.

Gerald, have you ever done a decent winch with a Tirfor ? - It will change your mind !
But for the OP another brand to look out for (probably only 2nd hand) is Brano, they were a direct copy of the early Tirfors - I've had one for nearly 30 years.
Edit: one on gumtree at the moment for $200 but at Parramatta

Its hard work.
Here is me as a young bloke back in the 70,s pulling my wagon with a 2B Forward Control in tow. Getting from Buin to Kieta in Bougainville.
It is a TU16 Tirfor. Still got it:)

Hello! I've done many a recovery using my Tirfor, and its one of the most handy pieces of kit to have stashed under the floor when in remote terrain. A Tirfor can be used at any point of the vehicle, and positioned wherever you want.. Yes they're slow, and involve effort, but I wouldn't b without mine!! Nearly had to use it for a beach recovery a few weeks ago (not me bogged tho)!!

Those things scare me!! Very difficult to hold a heavy load on a hill.. tho that could have had something to do with the guy operating it... The look on the drivers face of the vehicle being rescued when he went back down the hill backwards faster than he had originally done was hilarious!! Do they have a brake? I've had very little to do with a 101 winch, so can't really comment. :)

What the :o no steel cap boots & safety glasses or hard hat OR SHIRT! How did you ever survive?
:D just a dig at modern OHS....sorry to steal the thread.
I was considering one of these as mentioned, you can attach to rock sliders and pull sideways etc... I'm gonna look around on eBay too, good idea.

Enough nationals & you get the car carried out:p
As I mentioned I have a touring focus, and what I don't like is that heavy weight hanging off the front. Hopefully when I finally put in dual LSD I will be fairly bog proof.

Would a Tirfor be any good for a car trailer. I've been hoping to chase up a nice old aussie made dawn hand winch for my car trailer.... They all seem to be chinese junk these days. I want it to be "manual". Trying to find a charged battery to winch a dead car on the trailer the handful of times it's used a year leaves a lot to be desired :)
Of course the bonus of this is the tirfor could live in the back of the Range Rover out of the weather (hopefully never to be used .......... but if it gets you out of the **** just once, it's worth it's weight in gold).

We'll theRyder is$200 on special, the tirfor is 430, the cable and specs appear the same. I know nothing about Ryder but my mate is a Manager at SuperChep H.O , something to check out.

I have one, but there's no way I'm letting it go! It took me long enough to get it off my father!
Brilliant thing to have though, it's about 1/10 the weight of an electric winch and I've never had a bog I can't pull the Disco out of!

In a word, no.. It would be very slow (approx 1/2" for every lever swing...). This isn't a Dawn Winch, but it might do your job.....

That's a cool pic and a great advert for Tirfor. I bought an unused one with new 20 metre cable off Gumtree just last weekend for $120. Just missing the handle! Nothing a metre of gal water pipe won't fix.

I have a brand new one - as in never used but about 25 years old, someone stole the cable and handle but left the winch - you can have it if you can collect it

Doesn't work that way, it'll just allow you to get further in - before you become bogged :D:D:D

Appreciate the offer, but since i am in PNG, i think logistically it would cause a lot of grief, trying to get it and the other bits to one place , sure there is someone out there who would appreciate it.
cheers

I was lucky enough to pick up an as-new T516 on Gumtree the other week. The seller didn't know what it was - $120. The only think missing were the spare shear pins in the yellow handle. Finding replacements in Australia has proved impossible. Ordered some from Tractel in the UK. Not cheap.

I picked up a fairly good tifor off a member here who moved to Melbourne (?) from Perth earlier this year. Unfortunately I forgot to grab the handle before he left! Gotta get me one eventually.

Just been through sourcing a new handle. Honey Brothers in the UK will send but about £20 for postage on top of the handle. Bullivants in Sydney sorted me for cable, I forgot to ask them about a handle

Regarding missing handles. Go to a steel supply with the tirfor. Get some tube/pipe that fits the levers, then a another that telescopes inside. A bike handle bar grip from the hardware and a split pin on a tether to go through the hole you drill to keep the handle extended. Probably cost less than $20.00
Don.

Don,
This may not work unfortunately if you just use standard tubing.
I don't have Tirfor, but a similar design of hand winch (1.6T capacity).
The handle on this is of similar design with one tube sliding in the other, and I'm positive it must be made of high tensile steel since I can put a huge amount of force on the handle and it never bends.
Not sure how you'd go finding HT steel tubing at your local steel supply place however.

If you can't get HT tube use steam pipe with a thicker wall.
