Retractable cable reel

I'm thinking of utilising a retractable reel in my Trayon camper for a solar extension cable. Probably a bit more elaborate than I really need (I could just store the cable), but it would be a neat solution and save an anderson connection or 2.

I thought maybe an old vacuum retractor might work, but I'd need to replace the 240V cable with 12V cable.

Anyone have any ideas or comments?

I like that idea... What size cable would the vaccy have - it may be ok to use straight up from the panel. I would put the regulator at the camper end though, so you don't get as much voltage drop through the lead.

Yeah, I always have the controller as close to the battery as possible. I'd reckon the 240V cable would be too small to avoid voltage drop.

I think you will find the solar cable is too heavy for your retractor, and given the bulk of the cable, apart from having dramas getting it to wind up, you won't get much on a reel anyway.

what amps are you getting from the panels?

stock elcheapo extension cords with the ends cut off are good for abot 8a before the start to expereince drop.

15a cables go about 12a and the 20a stuff goes to about 17a
