hi everyone.
another issue that desperately needs fixing.i think this may have been done to death, but as i cant seem to navigate around the site. i thought i may as well just ask.
when i tow my caravan, all is well until i travel up some fairly decent hills.when the car needs to perform at a reasonable level of strain it comes up with that dreaded title on the dash.ENGINE SYSTEM FAULT.pretty well soon as i clear the hill. now what i usually have to do is stop, turn off take key out wait a minute or so and go again, sometimes it will not do it again for even a few hundred ks,sometimes if i dont stop it will go into limp mode.please any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated

I believe there's a software update for that.
Use the Google search at the bottom of the page to help you find the appropriate thread.

Are you in cruise control when it happens - I get it occasionally when towing my Camper Van and in cruise control but not with it disengaged. If the codes are read it will most likely be a Manifold Air Pressure fault.
Try cleaning the MAP sensor at the top of the engine at the back of the inlet manifold - it comes out easily but just be careful with it - do not poke anything down the little hole as it will kill the sensor.

So not the usual 3.0 D4 s/w fault. Need to discover what faults are being logged.

hi,
i dont use c.c. at all when towing, just sport mode,
garrycol.will try what you has suggested
It appears from what i have read using the search at the btm there is a sorfware upgrade that may resolve this issue.

Boardrider,
Have you got a RAI (snorkel)?
Mine would fault under load and it ended up being the bend in the inner guard sucking closed, which from factory was perforated, but sealed up with snorkel install.

I have had some random "restricted performance" warnings. They are corrected in the same way that you state. I was not towing, I was not in cruise control.
LR indicated the fault was an air pressure monitor and replaced it. Next day the warning reappeared. The dealer checked again and we are awaiting a part from Melbourne. I think they said it is an air flow sensor.
I'll let you know how it all goes. I might suggest they check the brake light switch
I have a MY12 D4 3.0 SDV6 HSE (6 speed).

I have had some random "restricted performance" warnings.
Is the performance actually restricted, or are you just getting the warnings?

I had the same problem last Year on 07TDV6 turned out to be the Turbo Actuator
about $90 for the part and about $1200 to get it fitted.

IIRC, the software update mentioned by Dave was a bypass to stop the actuator seizing up... by exercising it every now and then.

hi to everyone.
an update.
i have checked the MAP sensor, completely blocked and a lot of junk around it,totally cleaned it ,checked the MAF sensor, appeared to be ok but did a quick clean of this as well.then put the van on and test under the same conditions as when i got the ESF and was all ok. this may well have done the trick. But once again i am so gratefull for the time and effort everyone has spent on this for me and thanks again to all.

In my experience, I've found that I need to clean the MAP sensor every 40-50,000km.

hi Gordon,
sorry the delay. had a busted puter for a long time and so on.
I do have the restricted performance, had to stop and remove the key the restart, since then I have had the egr valves off and serviced etc etc.
just recently changed the intercooler hose with a silicone one.much better.
I need to get it on a scanner to check if there are any faults and go from there. As I bought a silicone hose kit I need to fit the others to see if all is well.Mind you I have to put the van on the back and drive some distance to check out the performance.
