I bought my current tilt from AJ about 5 years ago - it is genuine Aust Army and when I bought it was well used, though still in good condition and a little shrunk.

Over the years a few branches caused a hole here and there that were repaired no issues. The 101 as been stored outside as I have no where under cover for it but I have used a caravan cover over it.

Last week the back touched a low branch in my back yard ripping a hole in the canvas where it goes over the rear hood bow. I am just going to glue a patch on the inside and outside bit when preparing for repair it is clear the canvas is on its last legs with one section coming apart simply by just moving it. Also there is lots of oil drops over the top from the oil drips from under the vehicle being sucked up by the air flow.

I have been previously in touch with All Wheel Trim in the UK and from what I can remember from a few years back their tilts were about $1000 delievered here but they may not be able to match the Olive Drab colour of the Aussie canvas. I have a truck cab and fume curtain from them ansd they are Ok though the straps are all a little short and the colour is more khaki rather than olice drab.

Has anyone used a local supplier to get a tilt made and if so how good is it. Has it shrunk?

Thanks

Garry

check weight of canvas the minimum suitable for military use is 12 oz. up to 24 oz

I don't know original spec weight..maybe someone else will know.

some cheap tilts are too lightweight/duty.

shrinkage is common and some waterproofers act like dope.

when you get it treat the straps with waterproofer(most have an anti rot property) too. They start to rot before the canvas.

mine lasted almost 10 years outside.(then straps started to rot)

didn't answer your question tho':D

AJ has a guy that makes new ones for him.. Same $$$ as the UK ones.. Product and workmanship is good, but there are a few small issues with the fit that could be addressed.. with the next orders..
Side sheets need to move back 25mm, rear sheet is 50mm too long.. (Covers rego plate), no tie loops to secure tilt to hoops above load area, water tracks thru side sheet tie points.. (This can be rectified by tying tails to hoop inside with an uphill loop. :) Here's a pic of the tilt fitted b4 I started fitting the diesel. Shout if you want any specific pics. :)

I have the same tilt as Sitec, the other issue I found was the buckle straps just would not bite, admittedly it was doing 100km/h on a trailer!
I'm about to get mine modified to address the other fitment issues.

I had one made up in the UK. I think it was All Wheel Trim.
It was about $700 delivered.

Advice from All Wheel Trim - 375 pounds and shipping 140 pounds but shipping to be confirmed.

So about $950 delivered - certainly a lot cheaper than made locally.

You got a price and who actually makes it??

I have the Exmoore canvas on mine and is faultless.
My canvas would have to be more than 15 years old, but the vehicle has been stored undercover in those years.

I had assumed Exmoor make their own stuff, we had to wait a few weeks while it was made up, I could be wrong though.

Cost was £472.52, postage was negligible for me as I was already ordering wheels and some other bits and pieces and adding the tilt to the order made no difference.

Hoods : 101" Forward Control Hood (http://www.johncraddock-trim.co.uk/store/military/hoods-2014-02-12/101-forward-control-hood-detail.html)

It's good hearing your Exmoor has served well Ron, hopefully they are still the same quality.

The one on mine was an Original Land Rover one with the Label still in it. I rang them and they had lost the patterns and templates when moving sites. Apparently they make every Tilt that goes out with a Land Rover and have done so obviously since prior to the 101. We had a chat and I agreed to post back my original for them to reverse engineer. I heard this week that a prototype has been run up and that they would like my 101 up there to look at the fit. I'm exited to see a new cover coming out from the original suppliers. I'm hopeful that even if it's pricey it will set the benchmark for all copycat suppliers. So we'll all benefit.

I'll keep you updated, and pics ! Here's there contact details. I apologise if I've breached any forum rules in posting them. Steve

I am having trouble getting UK makers being able to match the correct olive drab colour of the canvas.

Does anyone know who actually made the Aussie 101 Olive Drab canvas - was it in the Uk or in Aust?

Thanks

Garry

Probably trim technology when the vehicle was shipped to aus with the canvas

Thanks - unfortunately they do not have a colour that matches but have sent the sample I sent them to their suppliers to see if the correct colour can be obtained.

Also TT have said that modern canvas is not as good as the "old stuff" and will shrink and wear at a greater rate. They advised that most modern military vehicles that have tilts of some sort now use PVC based material.

I suggested that makers need to take this extra shrinkage into account but they indicated that would be difficult as the patterns would need to be remade. To be the base of the sides from the bottom of the doors to the rear need to be made about 3cm longer as this is where the shrinkage mainly takes place - pulling the canvas clear of the door jam frame.

So modern canvas material needs more careful management.

Cheers

Garry

I purchased a new canvas tilt from AJ as my old one has given up the ghost, just though old age.
The old one was perfect fit and good quality with every fitting needed.
I know it would cost me about 2k to get a new one made locally.
I needed the new one in hurry so I purchased AJs tilt and the price was cheaper.
I have only refound this thread.
The new one will have to be reworked.
As said earlier the side and rear sheets are wrong.
Side sheets need to move back by at least 25mm and rear sheet is way too long.
Side sheets lack brass eyelets on the ropes tie downs and the rope will cut though the canvass.
As pointed out earlier the rear part of the tilt over the cargo area lacks tensioning straps and the middle of the cargo area lacks loops to go over the roof bars.
It looks like I will be up for the 2 k in total after the purchase, freight and then paying the local canvass bloke to sort it out.
Ron.

A few other things.
AJ s tilt has a side window on both sides when it should be on the left side only for a RHD vehicle.
The spare tyre will rub on the perpex and damage it.
Provision to access the spare tyre is missing.
The only thing AJ warned me about was the lack of spare tyre access.

Yeah, they aren't the best. If/when I need one, I'll get a local guy to do it and pay them to get it right. The tilt on mine was custom made by the previous owner and fits fairly well. I'll get them to copy it with only a few minor adjustments.

I got one from the UK.
Put it into stores.

I also have one from AJ that I bought quite some time ago. It would be interesting to see if he has had a design change.

101ron, looking at your photos the side tie down ropes seem to align with the hooks even though the hood is too far forward, on my hood the front two ropes line up with the hooks but from there to the back they are not spaced far enough apart the back one tries to pull forward at about 45deg, even if I reposition the front, I wont be able to pull down tight. mine was from AJ 2 years ago now.
