A few weekends ago I located the remains of ex SASR LRPV 178-199. 178-199 was the very first army S2A converted to LRPV configuration. It is therefore, the 'prototype' LRPV.

A photo of 178-199 as the prototype circa 1971. You can see that the bolt-on parts have yet to be painted.

The data plate shown below, was located in a box of ex mil parts from '199.

178-199....Mk.1....1970....Series 2A....6028K....Truck, Utility, 3/4 Ton, GS, Cargo, Modified for SASR Use....Chassis - 25334319G....Disposed - 14.05.73

Over the last two weeks I have managed to collect together the surviving parts to this vehicle. The parts were scattered outside and inside a garage once owned by a Land Rover enthusiast (who has since passed away). It would seem that he bought the LRPV from auction (1973), dismantled it and sold off most of the parts.

As can be seen in the first photo, there is not much left of the original vehicle. Hand painted camouflage can still be seen on the front guard, bonnet spare wheel holder, dash air vents, seat frame, floor panel, both fuel fillers/cap, fuel tank and rear tub capping.

Apart from what you see in the photos, I did manage to acquire many mechanical parts from the original vehicle.

The remains of 178-199.

This photo shows the outline of the 'gun bucket' that sat on the side of the guard.
