I want to get some new tyres and in doing so thought that a taller tyre would only assist in the off road ability of this already capable vehicle.

What is the largest tyre you have been able to fit to your vehicle without/minimal scrubbing?

I was contemplating 285/60/18

What's the standard for an L322, 255/60-18?

That or 265/60/18

I know a number of disco 3/4 owners are running 285/60/18s

At least it's a legal change! Don't know anything about L322s to comment on fit I'm afraid. But it's a change in diameter of 36mm and change in width of 30mm.

One thing to be sure of, is if there would be enough room for the tyres to still turn if the air suspension drops to the bump stops.

That was what I was concerned about. I had run 265/75/16 on my p38 with only minimal scrubbing on full articulation and on lowest height setting but don't want to part with $$$ if 285/60/18 would just be unworkable

Standard size is 255/60-18. 255/55-19. 255/50-20

Don't forget to see how big a tyre goes in the spare wheel well. Or leave it home / in the back / on the roof / swing away tyre carrier.

Hi Steinzy,
I think the 285 tyres you mention would touch a little too often towards full lock. I have a set of 265/65/18's that I use for outback trips and these just touch the guard liners at full lock. so I would worry about the 285's even at 60 profile. I do like the little extra height and extra depth of tyre between the rim and the road that the 65 profile gives. Mine are BFG AT's and the nominal diameter is 805 mm vs the original Wranglers at 763mm. The only mod I have made is to rework the outer cover to the fuel tank filler pipe in the right rear wheel well.

I forgot to mention that the spare wont fit in the space, however I carry a matching spare on my camper trailer, which normally follows me when I have these wheels fitted. If the worst happens when I dont have the trailer attached then I have the original size spare with me. However I wouldnt like to use a mismatched tyre for too long. Anyone have a view on this ??

Also keep in mind... Wider often comes with a fuel penalty as well as all the other packaging issues.

The 265-65-18 BFG AT is a pricey tyre ~$540 each..

A slightly closer to stock 265-60-18 D697 AT runs sub $400 each and are an excellent tyre.. Many D3/D4 operators are using them and getting great returns.

I like the D697 as a mixed use tyre

275/65 fit fine with minimal scraping.

The only small issue is the rear wheel arch which has a small section jutting out (seen easily with the wheel on) which I add. covering the plastic sheild over the fuel tank filler pipe.

It has an inch of play and you simply whip the wheel off, heat up the wheel arch plastic, then push it in while cooling. BINGO.

I agree with CBH25, I run 275 65 R18 as they are higher then the 285 60 R18.

I got a set of 6 the Nittito Terra Grapplers from Ozzy tires in Canberra for 2G and I could not be happier.

Only problem is they do not fit in the spare wheel well in the back of the car.

Does anyone know if an '08 TDV8 has the same inner guard clearance as the earlier models?

Also, did you guys need 'Johnson Rods' to fit the 275/65/18's or will this size work without lifting the car?

No Johnson rods needed.
Not certain about 08 guards, but I'm pretty sure there's no changes.

Small scraping on access mode while turning.
No scraping in any other mode.
