View Full Version : Bolt in tyre valve stems

Hi all, has anyone used bolt in tyres valve stems rather than the usual flexible version usually fitted. For onroad use I see no real issue and the reason I am considering them is because of the tyres pressure monitor sensor that screws onto the tyre valve. But off road they would present a significantly stronger valve stem, which may be a good thing and might not.
Has anyone actually had a valve stem torn out of a wheel off road?
I searched the forums as best I could and have not found any discussion on this, would appreciate thoughts and experiences.

Never bothered with them on a road car, but always use them on the rally cars.
The real benefit in that application is that they sit low and inside the spokes of the wheel so they are well protected. If they protrude outside the rim like the rubber stems tend to, then they are prone to damage due to their rigidity. I think if you put the pressure sensors on them they would protrude a fair bit. If that's the case I would stick to the rubber ones.
Cheers,
Jon

I've only ever seen a torn valve stem on tubed tyres, I've seen a couple of stems well past there use by date still doing duty that have leaked at the rim so I still carry a couple of the stems in my tyre repair kit just in case.

Hi Jon, thanks, I think it is against the rules to mention brands and retailers, but could you send me a PM with the details please, I would like to have a look. One of the things that concerned me was the online cheapies but if they are used in motorsport then they should be reasonable quality. I have some new rims coming so will check out how tucked in they are, but short is what I am looking for.
Regards
Peter

I had a valve stem shear completely off once, whilst driving on road in my old Rangie classic.
Just unlucky I guess.

Its been a while since I've bought any, but I'm pretty sure these are the last ones I bought:

Nothing particularly special about them and there are plenty available locally. Just make sure if you do get any that they are similar to these. I have seen some that need to be tightened from inside the rim.
Cheers,
Jon
