I just passed my physical assessment for Queensland Corrections today.
Am aiming on training carpentry in the local prison.
Will be nice to have full time employment again. I moved here to semi-retire, and spend more time with our son, but now he is a teenager, I want to spend more time away from him. :D
It has been several years since I have worked full time, and really enjoy training.
Wish me luck for the rest of the process.
Cheers,
Ken

Off to the academy for more training?
Good to see you passed the physical stuff.

Congratulations, I looked that way before finding my current job.
At the time there were no positions at the local prison. Just nice to be employed on the tablelands :D.

Further training at Lotus Glen, as I don't have to go to Brissie. Big intake as the prisons have just gone non smoking, and I am sure some of the guards resigned if they couldn't smoke on their 12 hour shifts. Not to mention some agro inmates.
Thanks for the support

Staff are also not allowed to go to their car to sneak one.Nor for that matter are contracters, visitors, etc.
The car parks are under surveillance.
Many are not happy about it.
But it is much better for everyone.

G'day Ken,
The corrections industry is one that is not liable to go backwards - unless there is more privatisation. It is a bit of a growth industry and offers stability in employment. The only drawback is that it is not a place to meet lots of nice people. Can you pick what level of security you work at?
Kind Regards

How long before you get fed up with going up and down Kuranda Ra twice a day? All the best with it.

Only a few private prisons in Queensland so far. Hope they don't get Newmanized
As for the level of security, probably not much choice initially, but want to work as a trades instructor teaching carpentry. The "residents" there would be heavily screened as they are working with some very sharp, or heavy tools. Just need to get some CNC workshop training first.

Ken

I had a long hard look at that, but it is 3 days a week 12 hr shifts. There is carpooling up the range to the prison, so driving maybe 1 - 2 day(s). Just a country drive after the twisty bit, and I enjoy both.
It is about the same distance that I used to travel across Melbourne, with only a fraction of the traffic here. On the morning of my assessment it was exactly 1 hour from my drive to the parking lot, and a fun run up the hill in the MINI  Coming home was a bit slower, as there was more traffic and roadworks on the range, but still not too much longer.
Thanks for the support

Was it The Great Escape where they built the glider in the attic? It would be a great class project:wasntme:

It is frustrating dealing with recruitment agencies. Almost a week has passed, and not a word on how things are going. Three weeks until the academy starts, and I have a current job that I need to let them know I am leaving. Fortunately it is casual, but want to give at least 2 weeks notice.
Oh well rant over!
Cheers,
Ken

I didn't know you had to be a screw to be an instructor.
I spent a while at Woodford stage 2 and was asked if I would be interested in instructing, but as the gaol grew around us and we walked in through razor wire and the heavy barred doors were installed and then we walked fenced paths to our worksites , it became more and more confined , and I saw how heavy the security was becoming , I realised there was no way as a free man I could go inside every day to work.....
I hope it works out for you.

Yes you have to be a corrections officer, at least at Lotus Glen. This way, if they are short staffed, they can shut down the shops, and we go to regular duties.
Funny you say you couldn't go there as a free man, because when I did my physical assessment, I kept thinking what a beautiful setting it would be without all the razor wire.

I think Woodford 2 is max security.....it's pretty gruesome.
the prison officers have seen too much tv....
I took my wife there for a drive to show her what was being done and the screws came out on the road in their humvee with there belts weighed down with every assault combination and surrounded my car with hands near their weapons and told me to leave the area. They had no right of course.....just being ******* and I told them they were.
the lifestyle probably gets to them.
I wound my window up and kept talking to my wife while they stood there all hostile.
I ignored them for about ten minutes and just drove through them with out giving them one bit of recognition.
I hope you dont get like that Ken.

I hope I don't get like that either. I believe in treating people the way I want to be treated. Same goes for, I will treat people the same way they treat me!! (within reason of course).
I think that training people a trade, that might improve their chances of entering the community with a chance of making an honest living would be very rewarding. I might be naive, but it is better than my current casual work arrangement.

Ken

If its anything like it was here in WA dealing with crims will be the easy part of the job. The politics on the other hand....

Well at last!! The paperwork has come through with exactly 2 weeks to spare. I had an email yesterday to say it was coming through, so I let them know at my current job. With the long weekend happening, it would not have happened until Tuesday. I wanted to give at least 2 weeks notice.
Now to take some time off to organise things, and have a bit of a holiday before I get stuck into learning lots of new stuff. Will be a lot different than working in hospitals and Cardiothoracics.
Thanks for all the support.
Cheers,
Ken

The centres are pretty touchy since the old days before Abbot did his runner, and embarrased them all.
It is actually usually the doggys that do most of the perimeter patrolling, keeping the public away, etc.
Back to the OP,i hope everything works out well,it will definitely be a big change from what you have been doing.
