View Full Version : Youtube videos - D3, D4 & RRS off road

I thought I'd start a collection of interesting videos showing the capability of these vehicles off road. There is a lot of content on YouTube, some are better than others. The idea is for people to post up a link if you find a good example. Maybe it could be a sticky.

Below is one from Africa with a MY11 D4, which I found pretty good. Its a bit slow to start with. I assumed it was a borrowed car. However, it looks like its his. Another of his videos is about him having it for the last 12 mths. Enjoy.

This movement might help protect the camera ?

I did this track about 12 years ago, don't remember it being this bad but the Disco did it well without drama. Mind you the hill decent came in handy and it was used for many of the very rough, steep ledge sections. I usually don't tend to use the HD but it was the safest option.

Sean, no offence taken just wanted to provide some context to me spinning wheels and making a bit of a meal of it! Should have been in rock crawl, doh.

I must say now I know how to drive the car and make best use of the technology it is incredible off-road. Although I'm not supposed to take it off-road due to previous panel damage:eek:, I will again be entering the W4 challenge, hopefully with muddies and GOE rims which should see a higher placement this year;)

The RRS ( Black Betty) had Traction Control issues as well as ending up with a broken P/S front CV joint. It was such a pity for Jimmy and Karen as they where the video creators.

Everyone was pretty careful, especially with so many eyes looking on. But the traction control made the climb seem like a Sunday drive (which it was), as long as you picked the right line.

A couple of us were down near that bottom section were Jimmy first had issues negotiating the terrain, Steve and myself heard what we thought was the noise of a breaking CV. We where surprised that he could actually drive on from that point, yes it took quite a few attempts as you can see in the video as the RRS acted much like an open diffed 4wd.

Yeah exactly this. I think the whole reason the brute was walking over the rocks better was the big tyres only needed a few psi in them. The others looked at street pressure.

I also think the D4 would have bounced around a lot less on that rock climb if it didn't have the lockers in. With that sort of stair climbing each wheel has to cover a significantly different distance to make traction. The lockers are forcing it to slip and bounce.

I also think the "shortcut along a river" with the brute was complete bollocks (aka rigged). No way can driving down a river-bed compete with highway speeds along a dirt road for travel times.

In that show, the American vehicle must always win. I wonder how the centre diff coped with the drive onto the aircraft.

My wife and I watched that ep earlier in the week. Her bet was for the yota to win and I hoped for the disco. In fairness the only one that was stock was the yota and it did go everywhere the others went (with a little trouble and bad driving). Even my jeepnik mate agreed the jeep was a joke - 130k jeep wtf. As he rightly pointed out, a stock rubicon 4 door would have made an even match and a more interesting show. The disco made mince meat of them both on that hill !

And yes centre diff hahaha !

The UK footage is of a couple of Knobs who did not

a). know the limits of the vehicle
b). clearly thought the vehicle could ford 1.3 Metres without mishap.. anyone can buy into any brand and give it a bad name

Here's a vid of the infamous Billy Goat track, tackled a week before winter track closures this year. Gnarly old track, but no issue getting down.
Unfortunately it doesn't show the severity of how steep this track is.

It looked like the D4 driver thought he just sat there waiting to be pulled out.

Strange, looked like it wasnt even trying.
Bogged properly too, even in exteneded extended height.
Sand mode not on??? DSC engaged.
Would be interesting to hear Gordons take on the situation.
Were the reverse lights on?????

"Driver has no clue" is my diagnosis. Considering he didn't even shift his tiller to aid the recovery I think it's safe to assume he was doing pretty much the opposite of what you're supposed to be doing (tyre pressures, DSC, TR setting, foot setting etc etc).

Either a setup or a clueless Disco owner.

I'd say:
New 4WD owner!
Never been on sand!
Tyres at road pressure.

Didn't try to reverse while being snatched, wasn't this explained to him before any recovery was attempted?

Total goose, wasn't the first and won't be the last either.

This may have been posted somewhere before but here goes - worth it to see the smooth composed and very, very capable D3 do its thing...
defenders do seem to make it look hard ? the bloke in the Black D3 seemed to wonder what all the fuss was about

Hi,

This is a water crossing I did this morning at "Rocky Crossing" Barrington River. According to depth markers the depth was 30-40cm. Current wasn't strong. Lost the front number plate on the first go (southbound).

I would be happy to take some hints and tips if I did anything wrong or could improve my technique.

Cool vid SBD4. I've been up around the Freemans Waterhole area a number of times. Its a fun spot. Not so much in the watagans but im not entirely sure where the boundaries are.

How come the rangie struggles up the rock step where the D4 walks it? They appear to have similar tyres and height, so is it a Terrain Response thing? Where the D4 is more sophisticated than the RRS?

Cheers.

Hey Dan, The RRS is a lot older than the D4 so the terrain response is much better. Not sure if the RRS has an e-diff or not(don't think it does) but the D4 does so that helps in some situations. Longer wheel base of the D4 also helps with larger steps too but ramp over angle on the RRS will be better.

Jamie's RRS has been through the wars. He has really pushed it hard so not everything is ship shape - he has had some traction control issues which stuffs him up some times.

Heres a vid of my D3 last weekend. If you listen carefully you can hear the compressor fire up as it goes into extended mode after it bottoms out.

https://youtu.be/yWmXEhKElaM

It was so slow, the young(er) fellas who had bashed their lifted utes through walked off half way through. None of them thought I'd make it through :D :D :D

I went out a couple of weekends ago to my usual spot and tried a hill I thought I'd never attempt:

https://youtu.be/0HgIHJu4RrM

Be warned - it is VERY slow. It took me 13 minutes to get up a small hill :p But there are three things to take away from this:

I made it
I didn't damage anything
I made it

There's also a shorter vid of another challenging section afterwards.

It's also interesting to see how much the track has changed in the last 5 months since I first drove out there (see my video in the previous post).

Cheers

Dan

Edit: ignore the incomplete plate blurring - its still to be completed before i post it to FB

Just stumbled upon the best example of what a D3/D4 can do in mud with decent muddies yet.

Those 17" wheels make it look tough
