The current Alice Springs airport was actually built by the Dep't of Defence and was originally a RAAF aerodrome.

I lived on the re-developed "old airport" just off Larapinta Drive before moving to Kalgoorlie.

You get the gold star. My father worked on the airstrip during the war, making it longer so that the bombers from Adelaide could land safely there. I have his pass to get onto the site.
