3 weeks to see all that SE Qld and surrounds has to offer, staying in Brisbane City as a home base. What are the must see places that are off the beaten track?

Cooloola national park north of noosa, good sand driving and camping. I'd go for two nights if you don't have much time. You could go to Glass house mountains since you're in the area.

Boarder Ranges, Take a tour out to Boonah then up to The Head, down the Condamine River Road, with 14 creek crossings through Killarney them up to Queen Mary Falls Nat Pk. There is a nice Pub in Killarney for lunch, or pack a picnic, there are several nice spots on the river. That should take a good day from Bris.

Out through Rathdowney then up to the Lower Portals via Fletcher Road. A very steep drive up the car park, the views are fantastic looking over Mt Barney, Lake Maroon and surrounding area. You will have to take lunch for this trip as nowhere to buy anything unless you head back into Boonah, the historic Dugandan Pub is a nice spot for lunch.

Just a couple of ideas.

Get hold of a book called " dirty weekends in S. E. Queensland", by Brad McCarthy. Most ARB shops have them. As well as all the regular hints etc, it is broken down into 3 sections

Private Parks of which there are 17

The Beaches of which there are 8

The Bush of which there are 14

It goes as far north as the Burrum Coast, south as Bundjalung [ Ballina to Yamba]

Each place has a map, with comprehensive instructions, you can navigate by trip meter, or Lat. Long.. although in my version, an early one, in the Glass house section, it can be easy to miss the turn [ I did, anyway] And one section now has a highway across the track. The newer version should be spot on. Each section has a tour description, as well as things like;
Attractions
standard [ easy to moderate, etc]
best time to visit
starting point
finishing point
distance
typical track surfaces, & much more. Take a good map, use the book as a guide, can't go wrong. Enjoy! Bob

Lots of very good recommendations have been posted to your question I over the years I have seen them all and I still love going back to them all unfortunately will not have time to cover them all. One I would recommend is a Noosa River cruise you sit back and enjoy the everglades of Qld with lunch at Harry's hut

Don't forget the islands! Brisbane is so close to the three largest sand islands in the world - Fraser, Moreton and Stradbroke. All are easily accessible by ferry and all have great camping and 4WDing! We really are spoilt for choice here. :)

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys. Have recently done Nth Stradbroke, Bribie, Inskip Point, Toowoomba and surrounds, and Beerburrum. Hoping to do the boarder ranges this Saturday. Now to find some interesting day trips to fill my time throughout the week.

Our daughter is up from Melbourne with her partner, he has not really seen Brisbane and surrounds, we are off to Mount Tamborine today. Nice short trip from Bris with lots to see and do there.

Kids would enjoy Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and its close and only half the price of Australia Zoo.

Search Duck Creek Road and take the fun route up to O'Reillys.
