ONE FOR THE TRACTOR BUFFS

In my search the other day for some Vanguard Parts and info I came across this tractor in a shed near Beenleigh The owner knows nothing about it as he is old and can not use a computer. The name is on the grill but, I am not saying at this time as to what it is. Its one of about 50 ever made in the UK in the later 40s it has a single cylinder 10 1/2 Hp. motor It was made by either the Singer coy or the Rootes group not sure which. There is very little on the web about it. Most were made with a single front wheel, the two front wheels are extremely rear. My research so far has one in Kingston SA. Kev's tractor museum. One known of in Qld. that's been restored.
I am hoping that some tractor buffs may have some knowledge that can be passed on.

From my tractor extremist neighbour;

The tractor is a Newman. They came in conventional and rowcrop. Not very successful but collectable these days.

Newman WD 2 Light Rowcrop Tractor 1950

The Newman Light Row-crop Tractor was first manufactured by Newman Industries at Bristol in 1948. Motive power was provided by a10.5 h.p. or an optional 12 h.p. Coventry Victor air-cooled petrol engine. An improved three-wheeled Newman WD 2 with a Coventry Victor water-cooled single cylinder diesel engine appeared in 1949. The WD 2 was fitted with a single plate dry clutch and transmission was via a conventional three forward and one reverse speed gearbox. Top speed was a little under 9 m.p.h. and independent brakes were fitted. The price of the tractor in standard specification was £330, optional power take-off, belt pulley and hydraulic pulley increased the price to £420.12s. In comparison a New Ferguson TED 20 cost £335.

You are spot on Don I have been around tractors a lot especially in my younger days and have a small library of tractor books but this one stumped me and I was surprised that any one was one to so quick

That understandable they have a very small engine back near the steering wheel and a shaft about 700 long up to a fan behind a small radiator right at the front no weight at all over the front wheels

A quirky little machine; ideal for a market garden,although at that price no comparison to Ferguson or the David Brown Cropmaster next to it in Don's photo, both twice the H.P , and more standard features.

Wonder if it has a worm drive diff. ,that had a tendency to wind tractors over backwards. Definately a collectors item .
