Rather than take the ugly car thread off track I'll start a new one.
Let's kick off with a car that was wonderfully proportioned and an unexpected runaway success.

Each "upgrade" diminished the original beauty.
I recall when the XR Falcon was released, it was toted as 'Mustang bred'. In reality the Mustang was Falcon bred, being built on an existing but shortened Falcon platform. All the running gear and much of the hardware was straight out of the Falcon.

The V8 in the Mustang was an option, stock entry model Mustangs were originally 200 CID three speed.
I think Mustang and sports car is drawing a long bow. The Mustang was more of an image car.

The only reason i say the mustang was a sports car is because a episode of top gear was showing some early mustang adverts in which they were calling it a sports car.

You beat me to it, but there is no way that is a mid fifties version - late sixties at the earliest.
But seriously, you are looking at a car that appeared on the market in 1955 - contemporary with the FJ Holden, Ford Popular, etc - and which featured inboard disc front brakes, self levelling suspension, split, load sensing, fully powered braking system, drag coefficient right up there with the best today can offer. By contemporary standards it offered incredible ride comfort and at the same time better handling than virtually anything else on the road. And by the time it was discontinued in 1975, the only changes needed to meet safety standards were fitting seat belts and antiburst door locks.

This one was in the Packard museum in Dayton, Ohio in 2011. An early thirties Packard V12 two seat boat tail roadster with custom bodywork by Henri Chapron of Paris. A very big car on about a 150" wheelbase. It stood out on first sight because of the sheer quality of the workmanship and fittings. A stunning exhibit in a museum full of top line cars. Unfortunately its location precluded getting decent photos. It was on loan then and was not there in 2013. Valued at a tentative US$3,000,000 for insurance purposes I was told.

Impossible to accurately value these classes of collector cars. Depends on which billionaires are bidding and want them badly enough. At Milwaukee in 2011 a superbly restored Miller front drive 91 had a suggested pre-auction value of $850,000. Two very rich collectors got into a bidding duel and it was sold for $3,250,000. A spare engine "as is" went for $250,000. Bugatti Royales have passed $8,000,000. Briggs Cunningham paid $10,000 for his in the late 1950's and everyone thought he had gone mad. Stuart Murdoch paid Henry Dale $3,000 for a Bugatti Type 57 about 1956 and one sold about 5 years ago for over $3,000,000.

How about a Kurtis Kraft KK500S? First built by Frank Kurtis about 1954 as sports-racing cars and in (very) limited production ever since. Examples have been made with most US V8's, a few with Offys, and some early examples with 50's six cylinder engines.
This one was built about five years ago and was getting a detail at the Kurtis shop in Bakersfield in 2011 before being offered for sale. It is registered and used on the road. Has a small block Chev. of about 400 hp. Weighs less than a ton. I was taken for a drive by Arlen Kurtis, Frank's son. Handles like you expect of a race car and goes like a 400 hp lightweight car.
Arlen will build you one to order. Your choice of engine, wheelbase, transmission, etc. He does not like fitting big Chrysler hemis as the cylinder heads get in the way. His favourite is the nail-head Buick, easy to house and lots of horses.
This car's identical twin was offered for sale at the auction accompanying 2011 Amelia Island Concours. A pre-auction indicative price of $85,000 was listed but it sold for $140,000. This appears to have become the benchmark price for these as none are now offered for sale for less.
Inc's system tells me I have already uploaded these photos in the thread Great Racing Cars from the Past, so look in there. System won't allow me to put them here.

Is it a Teal 37? Robin Day of Domain Day Wines has a Teal 59. Took a lot of time and effort to get it registered in South Aust. Has Jaguar six and MGB running gear. Very nice bit of kit. Robin told me that a lot of the stuff the SA rego body required fitted must have been very poorly installed and has since fallen off.
Teals are no longer made. Went broke years ago. I was exploring the possibility of importing a Teal 59 kit but the powers at Qld. Transport would not budge from their stand that it would be an "Individually Constructed Vehicle" and required to comply with all applicable ADR's at date of presentation.

As several have commented, Simca Vedette. Assembled in Australia from about 1957 - 60. My father owned one.
Ford sold their Vedette works lock, stock, and barrel to Simca in about 1956. The Vedette was the French equivalent of the English Ford Zephyr, but instead of a new engine as with the Zephyr, Ford France stuck to the side valve V8, both the V8-60 and V8-85.
When Simca took over they dropped the larger motor, and fitted alloy heads to the smaller motor, enabling a higher C/R, bringing the power output up to 85HP, same as the bigger engine. Going from 13" to 15" wheels enabled them to go from 9" to 11" brakes and move the lower suspension pivot out, and the less weight on the front wheels let them fit much faster steering. This transformed the handling and braking. At the same time it was restyled.
A bit larger than the contemporary Holden FB, it outperformed the Holden, and had an enormous boot. It also had nearly twice the fuel capacity, with about the same consumption.
We had it for twelve years, and it performed well. Quite good to drive by contemporary standards, gearshift suffered from the linkage added to get to RHD.

I'm rather partial to the 1962 Chrysler Valiant "R" and "S" series.:) No other model Valiant made after these two models looked anywhere near as good. In fact the last of the Valiants were ugly bloated barges on wheels. Except maybe for the Charger.

A friend of a friend of my fathers had one of these. He sold it to a UK collector.
Befor it went into the container, he drove it to the North Melbourne rail yards where, at the time, The Flying Scotsman was visiting. He took a photo of it with The Flying Scotsman. It was a pretty impressive picture. I wish I had a copy of the photo.

Yeah Mick, there were just over 1000 "R" series Valiants sold in Australia, imported as CKD from America. I guess the fact that there are so few of them means they hold their value to collectors. The "S" series numbered just over 10,000, so they are a bit more common. I love the curved gearshift lever on the manual "R" series.
I photographed the "S" series in the photo above at a car show last year.:)

John
Yep, you caught me out :) I did a 30second google search to get that piccie. There's 3 different shapes to the front bumpers and guards over the years. The rest of the vehicle for all intents and purposes is identical. They had a wheezy little four cylinder right to the end.... just more stainless steel "bling" screwed to it and fancier interiors.
1st nose:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/06/1128.jpg
2nd nose (my favorite):
http://worldcarslist.com/images/citroen/citroen-ds19/citroen-ds19-06.jpg
Strangely enough, my 1963 aussie built "D" has (aussie made) seatbelts fitted front and rear with the manufacture date of 1962. I can only assume the aussie assembled cars either fitted belts from new, or they were a dealer fitted option. I would have htought seatbelts would be unheard of in 1963.

Wow .... 4 wheel disc brakes ... If only I could be impressed with that .... My mother had renault 8's and 10's when we were kids... They had 4wheels disc brakes back in 1962 ... Holden did "almost" catch up by the 90's by fitting disc brakes AND ... get this ..... "Radial tuned suspension" :Rolling::Rolling::Rolling::banana::banana:
Wow, that's impressive .. They finally had radials tires and suspension "tuned" for it (my father has on old Traction Avant that has radial tires.... Citroen started fitting them in the early 1940's :wasntme: ) so it only took holden about 40years to catch up to the rest of the worlds technology.

1933 Duesenberg, then the 1937 540k Merc roadster; I'll take either amongst a whole heap of other younger ones :D
That is the Deusenberg "Twenty Grand". A much admired car amongst super wealthy USA collectors. If it was ever sent to auction the auctioneer would be looking to open at eight or ten million.
Here are a few museum Deusenbergs. I have more. Particularly the small fleet owned by the Nethercutt collection and Nethercutt Museum. "Sammy" is a 1970's replica once owned by Sammy Davis Jnr. The museum also has Frank Sinatra's Dual-Ghia Dodge.
Also a 540 M-B from the Reno museum.

Strangely enough, my 1963 aussie built "D" has (aussie made) seatbelts fitted front and rear with the manufacture date of 1962. I can only assume the aussie assembled cars either fitted belts from new, or they were a dealer fitted option. I would have htought seatbelts would be unheard of in 1963.
seeya,
Shane L.
Dealer I suspect. But seatbelts were certainly not unheard of - I fitted seatbelts in my VW in 1962, and the 1956 Series 1 I replaced it with in 1963 had been fitted with them from new by the fleetowner (SMHEA), as had the Series 2 I replaced that with in 1964. However, when my brother bought the family's first ID wagon in 1965, he had to fit them himself, as I did when I traded the Series 2 for a S/H 1961 2A in 1966.

Readily available from most good parts shops then. I was fitting lap/sash belts to my road cars from about 1962-63. I had been A over T a few times both on the road and at motorkhanas and speedway so saw the need for them.
Radial tyres were a hard sell. Until the early sixties the only ones available were Michelin X which had an appalling reputation in the country for sidewall damage. "Soft walls" or "saggy walls" the customers would say. Good reason too. The unsealed roads of country Australia with sharp rocks cut these tyre's sidewalls to ribbons. Country dealers then would order cars with 6 & 8 ply tyres as a matter of course. GM-H offered a full range of radial tyre brands with the HK and later models as factory options.

Good cars, Valiants. Major problem with the later models was rust. I once managed a fleet with 70 VC Valiants as rep's and manager's cars, Valiants for the reps and Regals for the managers. These were the most nearly maintenance free fleet cars I ever had to run. Hardly anything ever went wrong with them and overall cost per mile was less than other makes in spite of higher purchase price and using a bit more fuel. Good resale value too in those days when Valiants were perceived as an up market car over Holdens and Fords. The reps loved them. They thought of themselves as superior to others who had lesser company cars. This is important from the fleet manager's point of view. Happy drivers don't go out of their way to wear out or damage cars they like.
I bought my daughter a Volvo 144 when she got her learners. Very reliable and comfortable. Not good performance though, heavy car and small engine dragging an auto, a bit thirsty for a small car. Revved too hard on highway cruising for my liking. Easy maintenance but never buy parts from a Volvo dealer. Example - brake master cylinder, dealer $640, aftermarket $180, same item from ATE. The steering and the brake plumbing took a bit of sorting out when first purchased. Generally a good car though

They should "sag" as you say by design. They only run about 24psi. Soft in the sidewall they still are. I staked the sidewall of one of the tires on my mothers 2cv just moving it around my backyard at one point (sigh.....). There still bloody nice tires to drive on the old Michelin X's though. The insane bit is the 400mm Michelin X's are now cheaper to buy than the 15" tires for later cars (XAS/XVS).

This is actually a very complex design related question.
The problem is it is often hard to distinguish between "beautiful" and "fashionable". You can't just say "oh, the new Alfa 4C/Jaguar F-Type/La Ferrari etc is beautiful" since there is a lot about the design that is only interpreted in the current automotive design context. Designs need to age and then be reviewed independently form any current, fleeting fashion trends. There were a lot of people who went ga-ga over the new Monaro back in 2001 but now they seem a little, well... dull (apologies to all the Monaro fan-bois).
And if a designer was to just re-hash an E-Type, then it can only be viewed with reference to it's source material. You then have to ask why the original is not therefore the better design. Kind of like music using samples. Originality is one of the pillars of good design.

I'll put a vote in for lancia. doesn't really matter which one up until 1980 they were all kind of spectacular. Slim pickings after 1980 though with only really the 037 and Intergrale standing out.
The Aurelia b24 spider though would have to be one of the most beautiful creations ever. Then there's the D50,D24,Fulvia, HF2000 Flavia is gorgeous, Stratos, Beta coupe, Aprillia and so on. Not to mention the most ground breaking car of all the Lambda.

In 1957 aged almost 16 and licenceless I bought a 1935 Auburn Supercharged Eight boat tail roadster for 45 quid I made working on a milk run. Some time later, unable to afford to renew the registration or retread the bald tyres I left it at the roadside. No one, even the wreckers, was interested in buying a car whose makers closed down twenty years before.
Now they are worth six figures unrestored.

A 1910 Oldsmobile and a baby Bugatti.
The Olds has 42" tyres. It is possibly the second largest passenger car I have ever seen. At the same time Olds made cars about the size of the little Bugatti.

The young bloke also has an RX4 coupe in his shed - it's his "project car". He has a 13B and all the running gear for it, virtually identical to what's in the RX7. Body is completely restored and primed, ready for paint. Only thing missing really is the interior.
He bought it from someone down near Bunbury a while back and he and a mate took it up to Kal on a trailer. Don't know if he will get around to finishing it though - he's spoken of selling it on a couple of occasions.

The most beautiful car I have ever seen is this one:

Daimler SPF250
Can't say I'm particularly enamoured of that, but the Healeys in the background however, are seriously special IMHO.

My favourite Lancia is the "Lancia Aurelia B20GT" I nearly bought one in the 80's for 10,000 pounds but wife wanted a Vauxhall Senator and won :D
Needless to say five years later Senator = scrap value, Aurelia = doubled in value

Lucky bugger!!
I'm giving some moderately serious thought to doing the same with mine, although not a ground-up resto. Maybe just replace the twin SUs with triple Weber's, replace all the flywheel and valves, suspension, brakes, fuel delivery, coil, dizzy...the list goes on but it means I'll be able to take her down to the track for some fun and games, which I've always been too worried to do!

There may be a quicker way, if there is I want to know about it!!!:p

There is a very simple way of copying images to a forum post depending on what browser you use (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari or that horrible thing that comes with Windows). With Chrome you can simply right click the image and 'Copy image URL' or 'Open Image In New Tab', you then put the image's URL in [ /IMG] tags in your post. Personally I open each image I will add to the post in their own tabs, I then copy and paste X amount of image tags into my post, then copy image URLs in from there.
[IMG]http://www.classicdriver.com/sites/default/files/styles/article_full/public/dsc_1633.jpg?itok=Jgke6-UW
That works for almost all websites but some require you to go into 'Inspect Element'. Firefox is similar, I've never used Opera and I don't use Macs. But it is easy enough to find the information you need for the browser you use.

Instead of using the [ /IMG] tags, a simple way is to click on the insert image icon found in the post dashboard

The Alfa Spider is the only car I have ever regretted selling. I only sold it because I was a uni student, and when I changed the oil, there was radiator fluid in it. Traded it in the next day for a more practical Honda.
As they say on Top Gear, "every petrol head should own at least one Alfa in their lifetime".
I have not seen the new Spider, but I do like the look of the front end. Was not too impressed with the last body style.
Cheers,

One of my all time favourite cars! Only the Mk.1 though, not the Mk.2 with half-hidden headlights and can't stand the horrible bonnet scoop for the big blocks. Speaking of Isos though, the Bizzarrini 5300/Grifo A3C is another good looking American V8 powered Italian death trap.

Here's another view of this masterpiece :) I'd love to know the asking price of this one.
This 1961 Facel Vega HK500 is one of the most beautiful examples in existence. A meticulously restored car, it is finished in black and features chrome wire wheels with Pirelli blackwall tires and attractive twin radio antennae. Typical of a Facel Vega, the interior is also lavishly appointed with red leather, black carpets, power windows and has been upgraded to meet modern collectors’ standards with a beautifully integrated Vintage Air air conditioning system. Professionally installed, the A/C vents and controls have been integrated with the dashboard in a factory-like installation that retains the period correct look. Under the hood is a detailed engine bay housing Chrysler’s 383 cubic inch V-8 with dual 4-barrel carburetors and an alternator to accommodate the powerful air conditioning system. An extremely attractive car from any angle that is beautifully presented as well as equipped with tastefully upgraded A/C, it is a perfect automobile to drive, tour and enjoy in sublime comfort.

Here's another Jean Daninos masterpiece created on a Bentley chassis.
This rakish two door four seater coupe bodied in aluminium and steel could be described as one of the most important Bentleys ever created and arguably provides the missing link between the pre-war Bentley Corniche and the post-war Bentley Continental.
