Help: Removal of steering box

Hi there, Just got a project and the steering wheel shaft unwinds up and down but wont turn the steering box. I am gathering its clapped out, so whats the best way to get it out?
Anyone with info to help would be greatly appreciated. :D

Removal of the steering box requires the RH mudguard removed and most of the dashboard, especially if it has a steering lock.

I have never heard of one failing in the manner you describe - is the box itself faulty or is the box no longer securely attached to the chassis?

the box is still attached, the wheel free spins for about 3 turns then gets tight very tight. The wheels turn about 1/4 lock but the steering wheel shaft is screwwing out toward me in the drivers seat. Assuming the box is faulty

Sounds as if the top bearing has failed, but it is possible that the outer column has parted company from the box Should be able to see this under the bonnet. As I said, the mudguard and most of the dash will need to be removed to get the box out, as well as the switchgear, steering wheel etc.

I would also suspect that the steering is much more difficult to move than it should be, probably due to lack of oil in the relay unit, and that this has caused the failure.

If you don't already have one, I suggest a workshop manual - the "Rave CD" - see "Markets" on the top line of this page, is probably the most accessible.

Got the guard off today, What a misson to get the middle bolt of the firewall. Steering wheel off, switch gear off and dash out. Will need to get a seperator now so i can get the arms off and then the nuts to get out the box.

Shame I didn't read this earlier......I managed to remove the steering column (no steering lock) without removing the wing or dashboard.

I've seen steering box overhaul kits but I guess it'll depend on what you find.

thanks for the links, Just looking at the pics and to me the fork could be seized and its forcing the shaft up and down. Hopefully get the box out tomorrow to see.

I'm glad I took the guard off. What a mission. Anyways new Steering box in from the wrecks I acquired through the week. servo is all good. Its like the fork
has given away in the old one. Steering light as, actually got to drive it in the back yard. Doesnt select 4wd high. Next problem hahahhaa

Most likely one of the selector shafts that stick out the front of the transfer case extension is rusty and won't move. Probably just needs a bit of penetrating oil and a clean up.

Of course, it could be an internal problem, but this is not likely. Look at the manual and try to understand how it works.

There should be a dust cover over them, but it may be missing. Remove driver's floor panel for access, or, if you are a bit masochistic, it can be done from underneath.

Took out seats and interior today. Will remove dust cover tomorow.
Something just not locking it in hopefully its like you said, a bit of squirty stuff in there to make it move.

Yes it appeared to be the selector shaft sticking. Looks like all ok now.
