Did not expect to see Mazda on that list but the others pretty much deserve to be there especially vw

I'm with 460cixy - Mazda being there is interesting, but apart from that there are no real surprises.

That obviously doesn't take account of the massive recalls now happening for GM and Toyota.
Toyota recalls 2.27 million cars globally over airbag defect that could cause fires - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-06-11/toyota-recalls-19600-australian-cars-over-airbag-defect/5516420)

But that's not making them unreliable, so it won't rate a mention.

Well, yes, but no - not in the context of this report - they are only looking at engine, transmission and drive line failures.
Not going into bat for Toyota here at all - I wouldn't own one, but I'm just saying that the recalls won't effect this style of reporting, as its not taken into consideration.

There were a couple of cars in the list that were referred to as having Electrical issues.
But alas, the Report is posted on a Yahoo blog, and as such I don't read too much into it.
Some backyard mechanic who has a grudge on certain models of certain brands. Good for him. I hope he is happy and content.

When I was in the used car trade Mazdas were known as "Smoky Joes" and had poor resale value. Over say 6-7 years old and 100,000 k's most used dealers did not want to know them.

Despite my on-going love of all things Mazda, I have to agree. At least 20 or so years ago they were known for oil-burning (not leaking) or shorter than normal Jap engine life. Soft rings or block. The exception was the 'grey import' LPG Capellas (626) Engines lasted 300 to 800K and with a chain driven camshaft... needed no attention at all. Just maybe an oil/coolant change every few years, and new plugs every 5 or so...:angel::eek:
Mazda hasn't built another LPG / chain engine since, AFAIK.

For some reason us mechanics can fix us cars but not anything foreign. It's like they don't know which way to turn metric bolts or something.

I agree the older ones weren't great but they have improved a lot in the last few years engine wise. But the cars as a whole were allways ok and I'm no Mazda fan but I don't recon they should be on that list

I must have one of the good Mazda's, my B2600 has just clicked over 425000 K's on the original engine, it cops a flogging too, just this last week I have spent 5 days driving around Moreton Island and racked up 350 Km in soft sand with at times salt water up to the headlights......I just can't kill the bloody thing...... had a fun time too, caught a few fish, had a few drinks :D

We run Land Rovers and V Dubs, Wouldn't touch a new Land Rover sadly as they just don't appeal to me, and the Pumas just don't sound gutsy. The older Landies are fixable, modifiable and have masses of charichter!! Thats why we own them!! Are we mad.. Probably!!! As for the VW's, we have two, both diesel and both are fantastic. Mine had 432000kms on it and still goes like a cut snake, and the wife's is under two years old, and has already covered 75000 trouble free motoring. If you look after/service them to the VAG book, they're fine. In America they like to do it 'their way' and that's when the problems start.. :)

We're expecting our letter from Toyota soon about our Yaris. Far as I'm concerned, if it might catch fire, its definitely unreliable.
Never had that happen with our Disco. A few dodgy warning lights don't make a vehicle unreliable.
Like others, I was surprised to see Mazdas on that list.

What models have issues? I've owned heaps and never had an issue. Mind you, I'm talking early - newest was a series 2 Bluebird - great car once I screwed a turbo onto the side of the L20 and screwed an L16 head on it with 1/4 inch shaved off it and 2.6 litre valves cut into it, straight gas :D
Ahhh - the good old days...:)

Just looked up the vehicle recalls website and was amused to see that Toyota has by far the highest number of recalls - twice the total for LR. So, what's this about Toyotas being so reliable then? After all, recalls are not hearsay, they are the problems the companies have admitted are real, so Toyota has admitted its vehicles don't live up to the propaganda about them being reliable.

There are more than twice as many Toyotas than Land Rovers.
Maybe Land Rover are more reluctant to admit or rectify their mistakes, ergo, decline to recall.
Just playing the devil's advocate.

Vehicles sold don't prove anything. If there is a fault, its there whether the company sells 10,000 or 100,000. And remember, Toyota was recently hit with a huge fine in the USA for refusing to recall its runaway Camrys and trying to hide the fault.

Daughter and son in law bought a CX7 new.
When just out of warranty it started pouring oil back into the air intake.
Mazda offered them 15000.00 dollars on a trad. Jeep offered 1700.00 and got the gig.
They paid over$57,000.00 for that crapmobile new.
I have a LE 2002 MX5 and all that has gone wrong with it was the crank angle sensor.

Each to their own way of thinking I guess.
My mate has no mechanical knowledge at all so has to pay to have things added or repaired.
My mate purchased an imaculate 1996 series 80 6cyl petrol with duel fuel from his best mate 2 years ago for $12700 but had to put 5 new tires (245s) for rwc. Tires cost $2000.
Since then he has had a water pump $300
Kaymar rear tyre carrier $1900
Alloy bullbar $300
CB radio $600
Stereo Head $450
Winch $900
Tinted windows $370
Diff Breathers $120
New battery $140
and now a new alloy head as the old one was not repairable $3800
Now his 1996 80 series owes him nearly $24000.
Is it reliable? not really and the fuel economy is disgracefull towing his 4.2m caravan. 28lts/100km on gas and 26lts/100kms on petrol.
When we go away even without towing I get 8.5lts/100kms on deisel and he is about 15lts/100kms.
He now understands to purchase a vehicle suitable for your requirements and not base it on biased product advertising.
Others I know who own new 200 series V8s are not happy as they just suck the juice so much they now have a small car for around town.

Here's a Jeep owner who is so unhappy with his lemon he is asking people to destroy it for him!

Had Pintaras for work and they ALL had noisy diffs at less than 100K Km, this was in the late 80's early 90's. Had a Nissan Skyline of the same era, same problem. Growling diffs was a very common Nissan problem is those days, it was unusual to find one of 160K+ K's that didn't have a noisy diff.
Apart from this great cars.

R31's I'm guessing you are talking about.
The Silhouette's didn't have the same issue, as they had the LSD diff in them. Same said for SOME TI Pintaras.
But having owned several Pintaras and Skylines, that would be the only complaint.
Otherwise a brilliant car!
However, Pintaras did have the CA20 motor that the series 3 Bluebird had. The major cause of breakdown in those, was the propensity of that motor to shake loose it's rotor button! Other than that, LOVE THEM! Awesome cars.:)

Wow.
I Owned a 4.0 liter S type Jaguar. Fastest standard car that I ever owned! Super charged V8. Put a smile on my face every time I pushed that right pedal! I never ever had any problem with the engine or transmission! I was running down the hwy and everything just stopped. I pulled up on the side of the road. I could not even open the door! Usual stuff key out, key in, unlock, lock, eventually the door unlocked. I wind the electric window down. It would not start. I take it back to the dealer and they reset something! NFI. Needless to say I soon got rid of that. Even still, It is one car that I do miss!
