Hi, George here. I did do an intro some time back but I can't see it now. Posting from Ireland.

Just discovered something on my D2 after only 7 months of ownership, something that makes total sense. It's a plate riveted to the O/S front inner wheel arch that gives the car a number from Land Rover Australia!

I thought all the red dust and long range mods were a result of the first owner who I thought was someone from Northern Ireland, maybe being an overland enthusiast who probably took the car to Africa.

So does anyone know a 602 blue 2001 Discovery Td5 Auto 5 seater with OME HD suspension all round, LRA dual tanks, dual air con, grey cloth, cruise control and a factory Aux (as opposed to fog) light switch. Also had a seemingly dealer fitted VDO Dayton GPS system.

It had a snorkel originally but was gone by the time I bought it, and a cut down front bumper. Sitting on 16" Polar alloys.

If anyone recognises any of that will you take the car back please, so far I've replaced... EVERYTHING, and last night the head gasket threw the rattle out of the pram. Definition of love hate right here.

I do know someone who took their blue D2 back to the UK with them in about 2005. Sounds similar but I can't remember if it was a V8 or Td5. Could it have come via England?

Cheers,
Jon

Yup! that sounds like an overland drive jobbie ;)

Probably homesick Poms, that have done the big lap.:)

It might even have an Australian ADR plate on /in the engine compartment or on the bonnet shut panel.

Yep, Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. I hadn't considered the overland from Australia angle, but chances are if that was the case he'd could well have come through is island of England if you get me. Either way the first registration I'm privy to is from N.I.

What's an ADR plate. The plate I've found is unpainted aluminium, has a serial number, "Land Rover Australia", the VIN, no. of seats and a line about being built to comply with some vehicle act of 1989.

Jon did your pal overland or ship?

ADR = Australian Design Rules. The plate could be the compliance plate.

Ha, yes, that'd be the one. So yeah turns out I kept it going since November. And sod's law, it ate itself about 2 weeks after flying through the road test.

Haven't quite started the RR restoration yeat either due to amassing funds for specific equipment. (camera equipment). But this is the spur I need.

So where would I look for the ADR?

Shackleton,

(great name!)

Is it possible that the vehicle was used for a trip...
say maybe to an icy place... and then was stuck....
say maybe in ice...
and abandoned, therefore making it to Ireland?

Seriously - The ADR plate is the aluminium plate you refer to that certifies
that the vehicle has been built and complied to australian standards (ADR (australian design rules) - so it was Australian delivery.

So you have an aussie car... maybe (due to its current mechanical manical behaviour, you can call it "SKIP" as in SKIPPY* and as in rubbish skip :)

Skippy it is Digger, I'm way past taking the car too seriously.

The Shackleton thing, the name of the original owner of my RR nearly knocked me over... Earnest Shackleton. Ok so the middle initial was different but then even at 41 years she's not old enough to have been around in the days of the original.

I bought it to go on *Surf*ari, so whatever Land Rover I ended up with was always going to be an expedition vehicle of sorts.

Be interesting to see whether Jon's lead is actually the guy who brought Skippy to this dump :)

EDIT: Pedro; impressive :D

This is the ad photo I bought it from:

...and this is closer to what it looks like now, but a little out of date:

Going to see whether I need to link images or upload

Always better to upload. If you link and the host site goes down for any reason, the pics are lost to the forum. I've lost count of the number of threads on various fora I frequent that are now useless as the images are no longer available.

The only disadvantage of uploading (that I am aware of) is that images are not visible to those who haven't logged in.

and a sneaky one of my true baby, I'll find some time to do a proper post in Members cars for it cause I've done 2 engine conversions settling on a Td5 on a Defender R380 (long stick like the original LT95 so it looks and feels original), it's a pretty cool machine to go...

Woops, didn't want to step on toes so went to the 'how to post photos' in General Chat and it talked about imageshack (I've a photobucket account)

It was shipped over, not overlanded, but judging by the photos I'd say it wasn't - looks too good :o. I remember it was blue and had ARB suspension. It also had an ARB bar but that of course may have been removed. The more I think about it though, the more I think it was a V8 anyway.

Cheers,
Jon

Most likely not then, mine had OME all round, and it had been on there a long time. Thanks anyway Jon.

If anyone else has any inkling or recognises my Disco I'd love to know a bit more

...dodgy Land rovers from the UK :D

:D Stick it to those UK'ers mate, us Irish will be right behind you...

Tell you though, whoever spec'd this D2 in the first place loved it, at least in the sense that they put it together to meet a specific end. (although no linkage on the CDL, story there mystery mate?)

It's just that the owners between that guy and me were dickheads
