Just spotted a nice D4 with moderate Ks on carsales, has plenty of extras added.

"* Last of the reliable 6sp gear boxes. Wouldn't consider anything else for expedition use"

Huh? Since when has the 8 speed been considered unreliable?

Take the Redbook value of a similar vehicle, add half the retail value excluding fit costs of the accessories on the vehicle........sounds about fair. It won't be anywhere near $98000. You cannot to recover your full costs for fitting extras or accessories to a vehicle. If you take it to a car yard, they may not take any extra value at all into account.

However, in the end..........it is worth whatever someone is prepared to pay.

Having spoken to the gentleman a few weeks back I got the feeling that some workshop had taken advantage of his desire to 'have the best' and they helped him spend lots of his money. He told me the mods had cost him $40k. ...

Thanks for the replys guys.
OK,its overpriced and the rims are possibly dodgy.
How much do the mods cost????.
ie fuel tank $1000,sliders $750 etc etc etc.
Trying to get a grasp on how much extra to set something like that up.
Cheers
Andrew

To buy and have fitted most of that gear or similar quality gear but at a more reasonable cost would pretty easy end up around $20k. Then there is the higher spec HSE which comes with a e-diff, Logic7 stereo, vision pack with adaptive bi xenons and the extended warranty.

Is it a nice Disco? Yes it is a very good bit of gear with all the right factory extras and modded well for touring and off roading. It's a bit of a worry about the claims of all the power boosts from the piggy back module, who knows what is true there or if it is getting those numbers then how much stress has been put on the engine?

Would I buy it if I was looking for a later model Disco? Yes I would I reckon its a great vehicle with nearly all the mods that I like, but only if he was a reasonable amount more negotiable on the price, right now its near impossible to sell anything second hand unless its a give away. That HSE would be easier to sell if it was standard, the number of potential late model D4 HSE buyers out there who would want a heavily modded Disco is tiny compared to the number who would want a standard one and even standard ones are selling privately extremely slowly now unless they are give aways.

Hi Andy, the more important question I reckon is how much are all the extras you would want on a bog standard D4SE or HSE which you picked up for the right price? The question I ask with these cases is why should I pay what he wants me to pay for extras he chose that I wouldn't choose.

I want to take mine into the outback camping and so far Ive got a roo-bar, some under-car protection plating and a dbs. Haven't gone the rims yet, resisting that as long as I can.

Take the poor range from the small fuel tank, towing a camping trailer, let's say 500km. Not much but how often will you really need more? And when you do what's wrong with some jerries filled in the trailer for those times? Not saying an LR tank isn't handy and for some wouldn't the way to go, but I don't want to carry my spare on the rear all year round and they are exxy when you join the tank and rwc costs together.

If you find one with the kit you would put on yourself anyway, then it's a different story, that's a win, but otherwise you start with the stuff you need for your first camping trip 100km down the road and then you add as you decide what you need and what is important to you. In the meantime the hard-earned $$ are warm and snug in your wallet where they belong.

That's another potential issue with modded vehicles when trying to sell and or buy them, everyone has their own idea about what mods they want and or don't want.

Many people would rather build their own vehicle up with the mods they want and to be frank that is half the fun.

My D3 is pretty much unmodified - I'd "like" this and that, but the tradeoffs and actual need mean it is largely as it was when hatched. So there is, as Terry says, a lot of wisdom to buying clean, changing according to "need" and having the satisfaction that it is how you want it.

All those mods add weight (affect load carrying/road manners) and have debatable utility in most use scenarios.

Winch is a good example - I'd love a winch for the perceived safety blanket - in reality a saw a shovel and a tirfor do much the same job with more sweat in theory. In the actual world, only the shovel has ever got a workout on my vehicle although others have used my tirfor.

I've met the guy and the car a few times and it is very nicely set up. It has do e a Simpson crossing to my knowledge.

In my view if the mods are what you would do yourself and you arent worked up about doing it yourself then figure out what you reckon the car is worth same age and condition unmodded add up the cost of the mods without fitting and take about half off and you have yourself a good deal.

As one who has done most of the mods on that car, I can tell you it costs a fortune and easily gets out of hand. It is pretty smart to get one with all the work done. Just make sure you get it thoroughly mechanically checked.

I've not long stepped up to a D4 after having a D1 & D2 (Still got the D2 - it's now for serious bush bashing).

I spent about $15K on the D2 6 years ago and am very happy with the end result.

I was very fortunate to find just the D4 I wanted here in Canberra to tow my Camper Trailer as the old D2 was starting to struggle a bit towing a fully laden CT up some long hills.

The D4 was previously owned by a chap who on finding out he had a terminal medical condition, made it his bucket list priority to buy the best 4WD and fit it out with all of the required accessories to make a D4 even better.

He resisted reflashing the ECU but did have fitted protective bodywork, long range tanks, air compressor, additional rims and off-road tyres, fridge and rear drawers, bar & lights, max-traxs the list goes on..........

I now own it and having received all of the receipts for the work carried out - can honestly say that it is very easy now-days to exceed $25K on most of the accessories we consider essential.

The Sydney D4 has most of the accessories that my D4 has and has more kilometres although, I've yet to get the McHitch (Its on order) so yes, $28K+ of accessories would sound about right. I didn't however pay anywhere near the asking price of the Sydney D4 paying about $22K less so bargains are out there.

It's sold by the way - went last weekend. I spoke with the former owner about the McHitch and he was a very pleasant IT professional who let his mechanic do most of the recommendation and fitting. He seemed happy with his D4 and what he had done to it so I suppose.....that's what really matters

My D2 is set up much like that D4,but its a D2 and most of it was DIY to save money.
The half built camper trailer project in the shed just got re-commisioned this weekend, mainly due to a pesky retired boilermaker mate:cool::cool::cool::cool:
Im due long service leave anytime now, looking at saving it until Im 50(2 years) and do some sort of good roadtrip.
Pity I cant legaly roadtrain the boat too:(:(:(:(:(:(
Im sure a D4 would be up to it;););););)
