Polarising a generator

What is the correct way to polarise the generator in a Series 2A? I tried disconnecting D and F then brushing F against the positive battery terminal but it does not seem to have worked.

If it is post 1967 vehicle (chassis Suffix "D" onwards) it will have a negative generator, this is stamped on the body of the generator,"Lucas C39/40 Negative Earth"

All working. I had the generator refurbished about two years ago and apart from one trip it sat idle since. Pulled it apart, cleaned the bushes and commutator which did the trick. Then adjusted the regulator and all seems fine.
