View Full Version : Leaking Windscreen - D2

I have had a number of windscreen replacements due to damage
The only constant is: leaking in the same place - the top right hand corner when the rain is torrential
New seals have been used when replaced
I have previously tried to lift the top seal and inject a sealant - I put a crack in the screen when I did this
I don't want to remove the window and have it replaced as this has never solved the problem
Any ideas
Thanks

There can be 2 reasons for this, the first being that it has a Chinese windscreen glass in it like in mine, tinted across the top,the quality of these vary so they often have a poor fit and leak like mine does :( the other reason is that the vehicle may have had an accident and the windscreen opening is slightly out of shape (could also be badly built)
If you have had the car for quite a while, then you may have to replace the glass with a Genuine glass, but that could cost you a bit, as insurance go for the cheapest option.

Are you absolutely sure it's the windscreen? Are the symptoms a wet edge on the bottom of the headliner in that corner area? At the risk of covering ground you've already covered - it could be the gutter seal problem.

Thanks for the reply
I have had the windscreen replaced under insurance by O Briens twice, with the same issue over time
Somebody has suggested the gutter - So I may have a good look at that

The 'seals' are just finishing strips. The windscreen is bonded to the body.

Some insurers let you fit genuine windscreens. Shannons let me have a genuine screen fitted at a LR dealership.

Thanks
With the windscreen bonded to the car, it has always made me wonder how water was ever able to get in
I will take on board the dealership point, when next replacing

The gutter thing will be obvious. Right at the end (last few cm's leading to the windscreen) the cracks in the sealant will be visible to the naked eye.

I had a similar problem on a grander scale! Turns out the mobile windscreen man recommended by the insurance ompany used 'off' activator and the windscreen didn't properly bond to the body. Took it to a different provider who used a different bonding agent and no probs ever since.

They use non genuine glass which is a different curve to the body.
I have had 3 screens replaced due to stone damage. When replaced all the same result, they then just caulk up the gap between windscreen and body with Sikaflex to rectify.
TRY and tell them to use a thicker bead of Sikaflex when fitting a new screen in the future which I belive will fix the issue,I have tried, been ignored and had them fix the issue each time;);););););)

Right at the end (last few cm's leading to the windscreen) the cracks in the sealant will be visible to the naked eye.It can leak anywhere along the gutter line & the water will sit on the inside channel. Depending on how the car is sitting, it will run forwards or backwards. If it runs forwards, it will come out at the top corner near the windscreen.
Same goes for the skylights/alpine windows but they're usually leak proof on the D2.

if it runs backwards does itget inside the car scott?
if so perhaps its worth on the next raining day parking the car on a hill or puttingit on axle stands in front for the night..
if you find water in the back of the car then its def in the guttering.

Not sure. I don't recall any warranty issues with wet headlinings at the rear so it may just run down the inside of the rear pillar & out of the car that way.
