Hi guys.
Just ordered a camper trailer for our fraser trip in December.

Thinking if taking the Kidd yo Dubbo zoo in October as a road test before the longer holiday.
Any suggestions on camping spots in the area for a long weekend in Oftober?

When I research there wasn't a great deal around so I settled for the Big 4 which is the closest caravan park to the Zoo. We took our push bikes and road to the zoo each day. We made to most of our two day pass, where there when the gates opened and nearly the last out.

Hi,
we camped at Terramungamine Reserve (https://www.google.com.au/maps/dir/-32.1685717,148.585192/Taronga+Western+Plains+Zoo,+Obley+Rd,+Dubbo+NSW+28 30/@-32.1683025,148.5851446,229m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m8!4m7!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x6b0f70c0ae25 c1e9:0xf0609b573fe85e0!2m2!1d148.587274!2d-32.272137?hl=en) just out of Dubbo.
It is in the Camps Australia book.

Be aware that the map you get (well ours was anyway) is South up. It had me confused for quite a while, but that isn't too difficult to achieve.

I wish we had done some more research before just turning up, we missed all the feeding times, which was most disappointing.
I suggest you check these out before arriving, and time your visit around them.
Do allow 2 days to see it all.
We drove and parked, which involved a lot of back tracking to the vehicle. Bicycles or walking the lot may be a better option.

cheers

We stayed at the Big4 too. Plenty of room for camper trailers and a great playground for the kids. We stayed for a week - 2 days at the zoo and then day trips to surrounding sights.

We found walking around the zoo better than taking the car. Bikes would definitely be a good option. Try to book into one of the early morning walks. Well worth the early start to get a behind the scenes look at the zoo.

Plenty of bush here, but about 60km out of town.

I think you need to plan in advance if you wish to stay in Dubbo and spend a couple of days at the zoo.

Several times we have been passing through Dubbo and deciding to stop with visiting the zoo in mind , have been totally unable to find accommodation.

Must be a good thing for the hotel/motel owners.

I don't know if there's a low season to go impromptu, anyone know?

Last time we were in dubbo to visit the zoo we stayed at the dubbo city holiday park which was also very good (clean, tidy, pool and playground for kids etc). We had an ensuite site (don't stay in van parks much so why not) at the back with the river and reserve behind. Good place, we'd stay there again.

Bikes or a hired golf cart are the best way to see the zoo we found.

Was there last year and found the Big 4 was spot on. Hired a couple of bikes at the zoo which was excellent :BigThumb:

Definitely back this up... it's a minimal extra cost:

My kids loved it - well worth the early start.
