Has anyone changed the gearing in their Transfer box, I've heard of Disco boxes being fitted but Ashcroft sell the final drive gear and was wondering what kind of job it is to change it, can it be done in situ?

I suggest a Global Roamer overdrive as possibly a better solution, it gives both the taller gearing and keeps the low range options also. Easy to fit, quiet (if you do something to keep a tight fit of the foam pad in the top of the tunnel) and works well. Only downside it isn't inexpensive. Running in overdrive and 4th gear is similar to normal top but drive line is straight through the R380 box.

The job is quite straight forward changing the 1.4 to a 1.2 using the kit from Ashcroft, which is simply Disco gears.
You will need to remove the box as it isn't an "in situ" job and may need to repair your existing box around the idler shaft.
It is common for high km units to fret and wear, causing the transfer box to leak, but more importantly alters the gear tooth clearances causing excessive wear and noise.

You may find it easier to simply swap in a Disco box and sell your Defender unit rather than strip down and swap out the internals, however, if you strip it down and use an Ashcroft kit, you know its all rebuilt inside.
Dollars and time really.

In your case with the TD5, the Defender and Disco boxes have the same low range ratios and only the high range gears are different so low range gearing remains unchanged.

Or you could just go to 33"s

Thanks for the replys, I'm not after spending mega money so an overdrive is out of the question, the ashcroft kit seems the best option as it does state that the low range gears aren't affected so this is purely for a more relaxed highway speed. This link seems to suggest the gear can be changed in situ?

When you click on this link and expand to the bottom, you will find pictorial instructions.

The FAQ you mention refers to the input gear only, ie, std gear for a better lubricated cross drilled type with the same tooth count, not changing the ratios.

If you want a transfer box (lt230) to recon with ratios as required give me a shout / pm. I have on sitting in my garage looking for a new lease of life.

I would hate to have a 1st gear any higher then standard.
I already have to get low range out every now and then for hill starts.

Then again my 130 would be pretty close to GMV with all the crap I'm carring around Australia. Might be diferent if your not loaded up like me or had a slightly tweaked td5.
