Nice easy one.

Is there any car GPS units that have a straightforward 'Log the route I'm driving' so I can store and re-load it as/when required. I imagine a "start now" button, - drive the journey, the finish with another "Destination here" button and a name for the route.

Yes, I'm a total ignoramus about these devilish devices, despite owning a MIO ages ago... (tried to download updates and it died, - twice. Second time when hit with a hammer....)

The idea is... for things like a new bus route, or directions from here to there taking the Scenic, longer route that GPS's would - logically - ignore. Bonus would be if it could allow a bus-stop to be recorded.
Is there such a creature ?

Hi,
My Garmin Nuvi (turn by turn navigator) logs / stores the track automaticall, named with the day's date.

Ozi does similar.

Both will record way points at present position.

The best way to learn this stuff is to play with the GPS when in familiar territory, and see how it records your trips.

Cheers

Yep, the Garmin Nuvi (mine's a 1490T) has that capability. You can toggle displaying your tracks on the unit in situ.

You can also download the tracks into Mapsource or BaseCamp (the applications that came with the unit for waypoint management).

We use a Magellan eXplorist to log tracks as it can take a bit of a beating and we just let it float around the cabin as we trek about.

Ozi can also record your location as you move, it takes your lat lon at specified intervals and can draw that onto a map, you can then export that 'track' in a host of different formats that are recognizable by a heap of applications and devices, such as google earth and garmin GPS's.
We run Ozi on a small sony vaio in the car and have a magnetic USB GPS module which we stick the roof to have clear LOS to the sky.
