I refuse to pay $ 130 plus for a sand flag. Anyone have any ideas on how to make one for the front of my Disco

I used my UHF antenna, it was one of the thick white ones. Just slipped a home made flag over the top.

Fibreglass Post 1500 x 10mm pack of 50 - Fibreglass fencing system - Gallagher Permanent Electric Fencing (http://www.gallagher.com.au/permanent-fence-component.aspx'mktprodid=5690) Two of these with a metal sleeve to join them together (easy storage) inserted into a tube on your bull bar or whatever. Buy some orange plastic sheeting (used as membrane under concrete) and make your own flag... shouldn't cost you more than $20... or try the usual big box hardware outlets for fibreglass pole lengths...

if it's for the Simpson , buy one from the park management and help put some funds back in.

I bought a squid pole, modified the base to accept a threaded bolt and used a flouro triangle flag to make mine.

It's collapsible and stores nicely.

Not sure of durability as I have rarely used it.

Cheap fishing rod works well for the pole, and can be got in a 2 or 3 piece version to make it easier to store.
Downside is that SWMBO cringes with embarrassment when I fit it as I didn't bother taking the eyelets off :D

I made one using an old fibreglass tent pole, a few hose clamps (to secure the pole to the bull bar bar) and an old hi-vis vest cut appropriately.

I used a really long AM antenna and put a flag on top.

Dave_S used a (disposable) fishing rod.

How tall are they supposed to be ?
I was only going to use a piece of Orange plastic on the end of the (tapped) HF antenna.

Get one at the Birdsville Roadhouse, call for a price 07 4656 3226, they are orange conduit with a "Birdsville 4X4 Club" flag. You can tape it to the bull bar et cetera. Then you can pass it on or keep as a reminder of your trip.

Do you know anyone that may have a flag? They are not rare.

3m from the ground I think.

I made ours, old tent poles inserted into a section of vacuum cleaner extension that I had taped vertically to the bulbar. The poles were a bit wobbly, so I bought a 2m section of conduit to strengthen. Grand total of $4.

The flag was a section of rip stop nylon and the kids drew all over it to decorate it.

I think the flags have to be red or orange.

Basically how I made mine. And it collapses down to a manageable size.

$29 beach rod cable tied to the bullbar with a piece of orange material cable tied to the tip. :)
Have since caught fish with that same rod back on the coast.

Just back from crossing the Simpson. We had same issue. Used old aerial and a $1 orange flag from the trade desk at Bunnings and cable ties. The Desert pass book prescribes the height. Basically if it is 3.5 metres from the ground you will be ok.

There are minimum size requirements for the flag too - 300W x290H

20mm conduit inserted into 25mm conduit, (so it doesn't fold), or whatever size fits, depending on manufacturer, red/orange fabric on top and bobs your uncle.

That's how i made mine, with silicone to glue them together, and used a safety vest (cut to shape) from bunnings, couple of U bolts, cheap as. Leave it off until you hit the desert.

God, I wish I was heading for the desert right now.

Was the 25mm conduit the full length of the 20mm or did the 20mm stick out from a section of 25mm

I'd run them both the full length unless you want that tapered look... Haha

I've never actually made a sand flag out of it, but I work with the stuff every day and I'd say it'd be the cheapest DIY way to do it! And work well.

So 2.5m above a defender roofrack should be OK then :D:D:D:D

Mines been cable tied to the roof rack since our last trip in 2012
