Got a call from a chineesy sounding ladyperson last night who informed me that she was calling from Telstra to inform me that they were going to cut off my I/net as my computer was infecting the I/net , she said she would walk me through a fix for this that would allow m to stay connected and was I sitting at my computer ?? .
So for a bit of fun I acted like an old,y who did know much about computers and she would have to help me , after about 10 minutes of my antics and confusing the crap out her she hung up LOL .
Still connected this morning , next cold caller I am going to use the old ask them to wait trick and leave the phone on the bench and walk away , the things that can amuse me in retirement .

It's a good feeling when they hang up on you :D

Good work in not getting scammed and letting the 'helpful' person on the other end of the line get access to your computer ;)

Well done Fatso.
I had that call from Eastern Africa the other week.
Really poor line, lots of chatter in the background, it took me a few minutes to even understand what was being said before I had my fun :)

I like the market research calls at dinner time.
My first question to them is for the contact person and address to send my invoice to. I also let them know that my rate is $1000 per hour or part there of. Usually they hang up on me!

The scary thing is that iiNet really did cut off my Internet a couple of weeks ago (for reasons not relevant and entirely its own fault), but not by a phone call.
Has anyone else had supposed Tax Office emails recently?

I got a call from the 'Federal Government' yesterday. Speaking very broken English she asked to speak to 'Mr Greery' - not even close to my surname. She said the Government 'needed' to give me $1,851 and all they needed was my bank account details so they could deposit it...:D

So how do they scam you even if they have your bank account details?? Lots of people publish their bank account details eg Ebay sellers and have no issues - you cannot withdraw funds with just the account number.

What! You reckon it's a scam that they deposit money?
Now, that's a scam I want to be a victim of.
I don't know how they do it, but they do. Perhaps you should give them your bank account details, Gav. Let us know what they do.

No, but they can start making a really good profile of you. Once they have enough of your details, pretending to be you gets easier.
You won't see my bank account details, or anything else about me that contains personal information on the net. Go ahead and Google me - you get an American Musician as the top hit - I'm no where to be found.:)

All the fun I miss out on by having an unlisted number...
My sister got this one and said excitedly to the called: "Ooh I haven't had this scam before" (they hung up).
A colleague of mine loves it when people call saying there is a problem with windows (he only runs linux and mac). He pretends to look for the start button (or whatever they want him to look for).
