View Full Version : Replacement tyres Disco 4 19 inch road use

Hi all,

I have searched and read through numerous posts on tyres for the D4 and most deal with changeing the tyres to suit more offroad use.

I do pretty much zippo offroad driving - my D4 is a family move rand towing machine ( and I love it on both accounts).

My OE tyres ( GoodYear Wrangler HP 255/55 R19) are now worn to the point of replacement and I am looking for suitable tyres that will be durable enough considering that I frequently tow a 2 ton rig ( and therefore my tyres do wear down a tad quicker) but yet produce relatively little road noise.

I have spoken to tyre dealers and have reccommendations of Michellin lattitude tour HP, Yokohama Advan ST V 802, Pirell (several)i, Maxxis HP/M3, Toyo Open Country H/T, Khumo KL17 - too many choices and I would value any feedback from users who have used any of the abovementioned tyres.

Yokohama have a special deal on at the moment - "buy 3 get 1 free" which , all other factors being equal, would sway me int hat direction as I have previosuly been very happy with the performance and durability of Yoko on my Nissan Xtrail.

I imagine that I am not the only D4 driver facing this situation and I would value any comments.
Cheers,

I've been through a few sets of tyres (wrangler, gg at, scorpion zero) and have gone back to a set of wranglers recently (very very good price on a slightly used set). Happy enough with them for my use.

Hello unhurry,
My 09 D3 came with 19" alloys I have Cooper LTZ's fitted now and I'm very happy with them, they are wearing very well, great offroad and quiet on the bitumen. Hope this helps.

Thank you to all respondents: I am now considering the Hankook dynapro RH07 - never had 'kooks before but the reviews are compellign and our local Meredes dealership is installing them on all M classes so that is a vote of confidence.
Price given by local dealer si also $150 less (per tyre) than Goodyears.

I will let you know what I end up with and how they perform,

Thanks.

I've been happy with the Pirelli scorpion ATR's so far. Very quiet and look smart. I got them for primarily road use with the occasional off road use. They are quiet too.

I've had Coopers and they were good but a bit noisy and now have Pirelli ATR's.

Hey Epic,

Can you tell me what mileage you have done on the ATR's? any comment on the grip on wet bitumen?

Thank you

Very happy with my Pirelli Scorpion Zeros. Better for me on the road and not terrible off. They are 18s though. Much better than the Goodyears.

I've done a bit over 2000kms so not much. Haven't given them a real hard time in the wet yet. I worked them over in the dry in the Adelaide hills a few weeks back. Very pleased but it was dry.
It's been very wet here this week but only normal driving. If I get a chance to flog them in the wet, I'll let you know.

I was happy with zeros as well jools, would have put them back on (despite killing my last set in record time) but couldn't walk past wranglers at $96 each with (proven) less than 5000km on them.

just had 255 55 19 Scorpion ATR's put on today. $280 each for four and $330 for the spare fitted and balanced from St George Tyres so actually $290 each. Nice and quiet compared to the 75K Km worn GG ATs they replaced.

I am happy to have replaced my GG AT's with less than half those ks (I am harsh on tyres, I avoid slowing down, good for fuel economy). It is so nice to not have whining noises and squirmy handling again with wranglers on. If I hadn't got these I'd have gotten ATR's - how do they go on the road SBD4 (handling and noise wise) compared to your GG's ?

Some very interesting experiences in these posts.
I suppose the main criticism of 19inch ATs is the belief they don't have enough sidewall and are prone to puncture offroad. I wonder if the people on here have found that to be true or exaggerated.

Sent from my D1 using overweight hamsters.

From the 130Kms home, much quieter and more direct in the steering.Seem to be less harsh over variable road surfaces too but that could be due to tyre pressure differences. All to be expected I guess when comparing a new tyre to on old one. Very happy with them.

I would check your pressures...most tyre fitters over inflate by a lot. Don't know why. Most inflate at 45 or even 50 psi. I found the best by far are the manufacturers recommended 33front 36 rear. Gives best ride most grip. If you have bars and other stuff on the car up the pressures a little. 2 or 3 psi over is fine.
I say this because I have had two very scary moments one after car service and the other with new tyres fitted where the pressures were set at over 45psi. Due to the lack of grip came close to writing the car off.

Epic Pooh, you have had experience with the Pirelli Scorpions and the ATR's; 2 questions:
1) can you give an indication of the mileage you got out of each series and
2) for highway use, which would you reccommend and why.

Really appreciate all the comments on this topic....

I haven't used Pirelli ATR - only General Grabber AT and Pirelli Scorpion Zero. If it is for purely road (and mild offroad), I would take the Pirellis every time (can get them for $320). The Grabbers are very competent off road but they are noisy onroad (my opinion only) and they squirm and squeal onroad (again my opinion only). I am fairly to very hard on tyres, got 35K out of Grabbers before I'd had enough (still had life in them) and I think about 25K out of Pirelli's before they'd given up the ghost - they still had legal tread but too worn for my taste. As I said before, I've only got Wranglers on now because they were a price too good to pass up, otherwise I'd have put on Zeros. Have seriously considered Pirelli ATR as they get very good feedback in terms of road and offroad use and wear (at 280 a tyre they'd be hard to pass up if you want long tyre life).

Spoke with a General tire dealer - reccomends the GG "GT" as more suitable for road use than the AT
anybody had experience with these?

I've got a set of the Pirelli Scorpion Zero (255/50/20) and yes they are a great tire with plenty of grip in the wet and dry, the mileage is low. I've done about 22k on mine and they have a bit left to go but not a huge amount. If I get 30k out of them I'll be happy. Have done a bit of off road on them and have performed well but can't say I've challenged them too much.

on my GY Wranglers has been 35000km and they are now done. Probably 10% of that would be towing 2 tons.
Rotated only once, at 20000km so not the kindest owner.

Seems the Pirellis are soft but grippy and quiet.

Still ? anybody with General GT experience?

GG GT is a relatively new tyre, some folk in the uk are using them not sure on verdict. I'd speculate that Pirelli Zero would be easier to obtain (if you damage a tyre). Would also depend on price I suppose

Hey Epic Pooh,

Yes as you said new tyres ( or tires as they are yankee) and not much local experience - I did find this discusion on the UK landy site useful - essentially read the first and last post by cellerdweller to get the synopsis - seem equal to or better than the OE Goodyears for performance but probably more durable.

Price - well there lies the rub - quoted $345 per tyre ( Margaret River) and stock available . Compared to $502 for Pirelli ATR ( Bunbury Tyrepower).

Looking good...

You can get Pirelli Zero in Sydney for $320 - my local tyrepower quoted me less than $400 and had plenty of haggle room. Shop around and haggle your tyre (tire !) guy down !

My generals were a well made tire so I'd expect the same from the GT if that helps at all.

That's an eye opener - I was in fact put off by the price of the Pirellis. Seems to be less bargaining room here in WA but I will press and see what the best is they can do.

Having said that - it is probably academic as I have pretty much made up my mind on the GT's - but I will do the exercise anyway to see how much they want the business.

Thanks for all your corrospondence Epic Pooh

Digging up an old thread here but can't find the answer I'm looking for in any other threads. I'm starting to look to replace the 19" Wranglers on my D4 but just HT's for road use around town - I have a set of 18" Compomotives with D697's for when I actually to get to use my car off road. Most of the discussion I can find is on ATs for mixed on / off road use.

There seems to be a few options other than the Wranglers - Bridgestone Dueler HP, a few Continentals, GG's, Hankook Dynapro HP2, a couple of Pirellis, Michelin Latitude HP...

Edit: Oh yes, I'm not super price sensitive but Tempe have Wranglers for $269 ...

I don't have any particular issues with the Wranglers but happy to consider alternatives. I would welcome any feedback on other HT options...

Thanks,
David

With respect to the poster I looked them up on tyos site. They give them a 3.5 out of 5 for wet grip.. I read a few reviews and thought you cant have it both ways.. good wet weather performance and long tyre life.. Im still unsure as to what tyre to get.

I can't add anything David, I just run one set of tyres for all purposes. My Hankooks have such good road manners, I wouldn't bother with a separate HT set.

I just bought 4 new Wranglers for $229 each from Tempe tyres on ebay. They normally have them for $269

For anyone else on the verge of buying tyres there is a special on ebay this week with an extra 15% from Tempe tyres and a few other suppliers. I have no affiliation, just thought people might be interested in a good deal...

They ship for free Australia wide and the prices are pretty good to start with, so for example (post discount prices) :

265/60R18 :

BFG AT K02 $322
Hankook RF10 AT $189
Monsta AT $162
Monsta mud $162

255/55R19 Hankook Dynapro RF10 $219

you gotta to relax in the wet, trusting the discovery, advice from old bike rider with lotsa snow time in the car, got Coopers myself, disappointed in the wall burst a tyre gently rubbing a sandstone block, first week after fitting
must admit which tyre to pick was a mystery to me, sine then I'd go for a less expensive rubber

True, although it was 4 years ago and I didn’t just drop a blanket question with no prior research. This is the opening to my post (which I’m assuming you probably missed):

I had a set of 19" Federal Couragia F/X on an RRS TDV8 which I purchased about 4 years ago. They were very good in the wet and I got around 55,000 klms out of them. Would buy them again if I need "road" tyres. Not expensive.

On my range rover sport 2008 tdv8 (disco3 with funky body), I recently changed my compomotive 18" with general tire grabber at3 255/55R18 to the standard 19" and new pirelli verde all season 255/50R19. That made a huge difference to handling and comfort. The underdamped shox feeling was greatly reduced too. I drive on fast windy country road including dirt. Still drives across wet paddocks on the property OK. Not cheap though. (compomotives now have D697 265/60R18 for trips only; the general tire at3 where better than the D697 on road too).

I'm on my 2nd set of Pirelli Scorpian AT Plus tyres on my D4. I really like them! very sure footed, even in severe wet conditions and quiet. I like the way the D4 drives with them. I rarely go off sealed roads but tow a boat to some fairly remote places and like the AT design just in case. If I never left the bitumen I would probably still go with the Pirellis! Not cheap, but I got 80,000 km out of the last set.
