AB Report – Production Land Rover Discovery teased; production site and launch confirmed for 2015

Posted on Jun 19 2014 - 6:12pm by

JLR has confirmed the production of the Land Rover Discovery Sport at its Halewood plant and announced the addition of 250 jobs for the purpose. The Discovery Sport will succeed the Freelander 2 (http://indianautosblog.com/2014/03/2015-land-rover-freelander-2-124572) when it goes on sale in 2015.

Inspired by the Discovery Vision Concept (http://indianautosblog.com/2014/04/land-rover-discover-vision-concept-127446) showcased at the New York Auto Show in January and the Beijing Auto Show in April (http://indianautosblog.com/2014/04/land-rover-discovery-vision-concept-beijing-128262), the Discovery Sport will be the first member of the all new Discovery family. Our rendering specialist Shoeb had envisioned the Discovery Sport based on the Concept.
The concept boasted of several cutting edge technologies like transparent hood technology, laser referencing, remote control drive and gesture recognition. Some of these technologies will make it into the production version.
The Land Rover Discovery Sport would rely on the Ingenium range of new four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines that will also power the upcoming Jaguar XE sedan (http://indianautosblog.com/2014/03/jaguar-xe-123246). A 9-speed ZF gearbox would be available in at least the top-of-the-line variant, driving all the four wheels.

To accommodate the new model, JLR has invested 200 million Euros in the Halewood plant and the addition of new workforce has taken the total employee strength at Halewood to 4,750. The investment had gone into installing production and quality control equipment such as Aida servo press line, 260 robots, laser welding equipment and so on.
The new Land Rover is likely to grace the Paris Motor Show in October this yea

If it has the ZF 9HP auto,it will be the first Disco to have a transverse engine.

It looks like the bastard child of an Evoque and a Ford Territory.

I really despair about the designs coming out of LR at the moment. They are all just clones of each other now - no individually left in any of the models they are going to. Commercially, they are probably doing the right thing, but it just makes them like any other car maker in the world. :(

So will the Sport be faster or slower than the Discovery?

I wonder why LandRover has moved away from the "Freelander" name??? I know the Freelander 1 damaged the name a lot but the Freelander 2 did a lot to claw that back:) So, will people associate the Discovery Sports as a Freelander by another name???

Reminds me of Mitsubishi Australia having the Magna name for years and then for no reason decide to dump the name and call the car by the strange name of "380". Thereby undoing years of product recognition.

Not real pretty. But I didn't like the D1 when it came out either, so maybe it will grow on me.............;)
Had to laugh, when the chick went in for the peck on the cheek, it looked like she was going to head but him.:D

Can't see the youtube clip (I'm at work and they're blocked) - but if it is the Discovery Sport as you've said in the title, it's not the new Discovery - it's the new Freelander replacement.

Having said that, the concept pics that I've seen of the new Discovery is somewhat similar in style, though larger. Looks similar to the Ford Territory in many respects.

Google "Discovery Vision Concept".

Personally I think the New 'Freelander Replacement' looks pretty darn swish, provided it comes with low range Id seriously be tempted towards one!
I can already imagine it now sitting a bit higher with RAI and bullbar. . .

the big question is, will it stay in the Freelander price point? surely it has to be cheaper than the Evoque?

It has the same new ZF 9 speed auto as the Evoque, which has a crawler 1st gear and usually starts in second on road.

It also has an electronic rear diff with electronically controlled clutches that direct power to each rear wheel with no direct gear connection.

The LRO tester thought it was very good on the test track but not as good as a mechanical 2 speed setup.

I am starting to think that the Land Rover people

Have lost the plot the Land Rover was a utilitarian

Vehicle that was simple to maintain simpler still in

Construction and to repair would go just about anywhere

And did not readily turn into a rust bucket now days

It seems to be becoming a a status symbol or Yuppy vehicle

That you would not want to take out in the paddock

To do a days work from or even take out in the bush

Cause ya might scratch it -- Any one know when the

Last rites ceremony is being held

It has some similarity with the Ford Territory.
I would love to see some 3rd world country to start building the old RR Classic again with a simple and powerful engine
Keep dreaming......................
Then again some Chinese can copy it

Hi Pat, if I may Interject,
I know what you are getting at, the Rangie, back in the day, was a Marvel to behold. It was displayed at Galleries etc as the master piece that it was, and still is. (I Luuuurve my 89)
However, nowadays it's not at all the same thing.
There is nothing groundbreaking about this car at all. The only difference is it has more sophisticated software than the others. It has a few more bits of Electrickery. Mechanically, it's not a hell of a lot different to anything else on the road. Mechanically, there is only so much car makers can do to a Vehicle.
It's all now down to what gadgets and gimmicky 'stuff' it has.
One simple example...........Do you (or anyone) really need, I mean REALLY need, a 10plus speaker system????;)

It's not about do we need 10 speakers,it's about what the market wants.I'm with you,I have no time for gadgets but many people do,the FL1/2/Evoque and the Disco sport have and will sell well and bring people to the brand, thats good for LR and good for us. Pat

So they are ahead of the rest....

I wonder when they will go to a 5yr warranty, seems longer warranties are the trend.

i would rather have a longer warranty than some of this unneeded electikery stuff that isn't really.

The replacement for the D4 will for sure just be a bigger one of these, with different engines, etc.

new disco sport looks *yawn zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz :spudniksnore:

Best looking disco was the D2 IMO :clap2:

D3 came out looking like a transit van, D4 didn't improve on those looks much. :wasntme:

Perhaps the D5 will just be a people carrier a la renault espace ->

Had a sit in a new Disco Sport in Southerns showroom today.
Was surprised how roomy it was, very little difference in the drivers chair to the D4,improved vision too.Back seat is more cramped, the rear area, not alot smaller than a D2.
Wouldnt mind a drive.
How cool is the glowing "DISCOVERY" nameplate on the front sills:cool::cool::cool::cool:
Look much better in the skin than the ewoks do.

Some of the real Land Rover owners are still waiting for the Defender Sport SUV. Have I missed something?

Sat in one today but didn't have time to take it for a drive. I reckon it looks as awkward in the metal as it does in everything I've seen online. Especially the back.

Was able to get comfortable very quick in the driver's seat and there's no doubt one could do many k's in one.

But the engine - same rattly unit as the Freelander 2. With the new engine they might be worth a look.

They are saying not until the first model update, although it is already in the vehicle overseas.

Is it? I thought it was just released in the jag and soon to be in the DS.

Pretty sure we'll keep the trouble free FL2
