View Full Version : Show us your Perenties! - The Landy Lizard thread
Dervish
22nd June 2014, 11:44 AM
We all knew this thread was inevitable. :D
We all love Perenties here, so post up any pictures you have of your ex-military beastie; out in the bush, at the ANZAC day parades, working on the farm - whatever you have. Like the similar threads here on AULRO this will hopefully be a breeding ground for discussion on our Landie-lizards.
I'll start with my own Perentie 48-010.

Great job there - what condition was it in when you got it? Any hidden surprises? The 'incomplete' Perenties seem to range from "we couldn't be bothered screwing the tail light lenses on" to "we don't know where the gearbox went"!

Is that the original bonnet?
No, its off my old 1985 County that I sadly dismantled & sold off in parts. Funnily enough, it was the main reason I bought this vehicle as I thought, Oh I need a Landie to go with this bonnet nobody wants :D
As it was I had to grind down the pin as the County one is larger than a Defender one that was on the Perentie and if you are really observant, you can see some door trims I used to close the gap to the guards.

Okay, another newbie :p:p
I acquired FFR 49-232 at the Minto auction. Seems in good pretty good nick to a rank amateur but we will see once it goes to an expert. Just over 14k kms according to the log books since they did a rebuild. 2nd log book from when they reset the counter says allocated to the Solomon Islands. Looked for Solomon deployed lists and found a few but this one wasn't in those lists.
So no spare tyre (brought an extra No 5 trailer cheapish for the wheels), and no jack or wheel brace. Spoke to the guys at Grays, they are frustrated as Army has told them they have so many spares its ridiculous, but with 'the wait until they are all sold' mantra they reckon the lots when they release will need to be huge so that the average joe won't bother, so most will go to scrap merchants. They have counselled selling some off as they go but the Army know better :twisted:
So this is my 2nd Landy, had a '64/'65 a long time ago. Then a couple of those electronic wizardy comfy Jap things (lease thru work), fantasic to drive but scary if something went wrong, as it did with me, sand dune jumped out at me .. so having driven ATWOODS Perentie over Easter I thought, why not especially since I am local at Minto. ATWOOD's had fitted the power steering, thought I could live without it ;);) Well, my x2 D clutching going around tight roundabouts leaves something to be desired :o:o So will be booking it in :D:D plus a few locks to be fitted, and another standard tow bar fitting and plug (will need both). Turbo is on the back burner at this point.
Now where's the best place for a jack and brace ?? Plus need some cord for the canvas at the back ??

Hi,
Aussie disposals for green braided rope, 5 mm. Any 2t jack would be good enough, use a block of wood to get height and stability. 27mm is nut size, plenty on ebay but best to get the cross style as you will need to put in in the hole in the rear panel to lower the spare

Could you please link to the ones you purchased?
Also, do they run at cooler temp than std bulb?
I'm aware some LED sets run hot due to the voltage converter.

ok so its not ebay but banggood, which is a wholesaler a lot of people on ebay dropship through.
12V 1W High Power LED Car Light Bulb White+Warm White - AU$2.65 (http://www.banggood.com/12V-1W-1156-High-Power-LED-Car-Light-Bulb-WhiteWarm-White-p-931491.html)
$2.65 AUD, posted to your door from Hong Kong, in 7-10 wdays.
Ive used ebay/chinese leds like this on every car in the past 5+ years and basically.. if they survive the fitting of the globe (manhandling) they are good for ever haha.
Older styles were much weaker and could break when 'twisting' the bayonet into it. Not a problem with these newer ones, they are greattttttt :D
Also on the too bright note, camera lens's do enhance lighting effects - take a look at the original 'dim' one and see how bright it looks in the pic compared to your eyes. The LEDs are definately brighter, but not going to dazzle anyone. On the 'bright' side, I can drive up my narrow driveway without headlights haha.
As for reversing, well.. those 1w ones probably wont cut it.. twin 7W crees? yes please. Also wiring in a 10W cree wide angle floodlamp for even more reversing lumens but thats not done yet ;-) will post pics when they arrive?
(the link/url i posted seems to be auto turning into an ebay advertisement for a different thing.. goto ebay, search for item 231283497987 for reversing lights, $2.56 AUD each side (so $5.12 total) posted to your door, 7-10 wdays)
Also.. heat is a non issue. The only issue is newer cars (like 2006 range rover vogues...) will actually think the bulbs blown due to the extremely low current draw and as such, the dash will say 'light blown' AND cut power to the socket! Intelligent motoring at its finest..

I would think that they'd be fine. That said, I used amber LEDs on the front of my Defender (these ones (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ZD0369)). I used these (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ZD0518) for the parkers. The CREE replacements are excellent and don't draw too much attention as they look like normal bulbs.
You could use CREEs to replace all bulbs on a Perentie without changing the housings (and I plan to):
T-10 - here (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ZD0493), side indicators
BA-15S - here (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ZD0518), indicators and reverse lights
BA-15D - here (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ZD0515), brake lights
I wrote a thread on changing the indicators to LEDs with the various pitfalls associated with it here (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/185099-led-defender-rear-lights-indicators-flasher-unit.html). With most LED replacements the beam spread is not right for conventional bulb housings, which makes them either look funny or not work well. Theses CREEs emit uniform light all around just like an incandescent bulb though so I have no qualms using them. That said, there's the old chestnut of legality.

Thanks a lot for that info. Do those brake lights replace the dual filament tail/brake standard ones, how do they work?
The Perenties have trailer lights on the back so will have to check what lamps they take.

Yes, they replace the dual filament bulbs. They have the same dual contacts on the base which regulate different levels of current flow through the emitters and thereby their light output.
The bulbs quoted are for the Perentie (Hella 2401) light fitting. The same bulbs as a normal Defender though.

Interesting, I was just trying to find a led direct replacement for the Hella 2401 and can only find jumbo combo lights that are half a meter long.
Obviously the 73mm lamps have a direct replacement, but what about the perentie trailer lights?

The LED lights on AFM's Perentie are LED Autolamps 80BARWs.
Welcome to LED Technologies Pty. Ltd. (http://www.ledautolamps.com/)
Incidentally, they are what I have on my Defender as you would've seen in that link. LED Autolamps have another option that would fit - the Australian made one in their catalogue - and Narva have one too (http://www.narva.com.au/products/browse/model-42-4). None of them have a similar appearance to the Hella unfortunately.

I've installed the 7w Crees in the reversing lights and they are fantastic.I have a fairly long steep driveway and they light up the whole thing almost like spotlights! I have the 7.5w dual filament bulbs on order for the stop/tail lights but I'm now worried they may be too bright. I have some 5w Crees coming as well for the turning indicators.

What's the secret to changing a globe in the indicators on the front fenders? Are the lights a push in fitting or does it require removing the inner guard to access screws/bolts that hold the lights in place?
Thanks in advance!
Cheers, Mick.

HI, two screws to take off the lens, then the globe needs to be pushed in and 1/4 turn anti clockwise and it should pop out, the globes have two pins on them
they can be quite stuck sometimes, I've even had to brake the glass and get some pointy nose plyers onto the metal base to be able to turn them
hope this helps

Jump in, start engine, put in reverse, kill engine
you get maybe 10 seconds of reverse lights before they lose pressure?

Minikeg,
To check operation of reversing lights solo with the engine running you can put the transfer into neutral and then engage reverse with handbrake on.
Can't take credit for this one - thanks to JDNSW who posted it here when I was sorting mine out.

I got a HID conversion kit, 6000k 35w from sca, bout $80 on clearance.
The xenon light ranges starting with yellow, going whitest at 6000k and slowly going blue towards 12000k. The closer to 12000k the bluer the light but the less it travels. General consensus is 6000k is the brightest, whitest light available which throws the light further.
Much better than standard, only required a 15mm hole drilled in the bowl for cable exit, and then the ballasts mounted (i stuck mine to the sides of the radiator panel). Kit came ready to go, just has a H4 power socket on one side to pick up headlight switch power and a line to the battery (starter anyway) which hopefully makes the lr stalk last much longer with no load. Also the kits 30w so its less than your standard halogen headlights.
Did you just change the bulbs?
while the answer to this could be yes, I got new 'headlights' also, with LED rings inside them ala BMW angel eyes for my series III 2 years ago but it never made it to the road, so I used them instead

The rarer versions already and as they become sold off and worn out in public hands the good ones will become more valuable as the 2A's and 3's have become. Only the good and in original condition ones will hold their value I would think. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/05/1588.jpg

In 2040 (25yrs away) a fully original ex-SASR LRPV, hand autographed by Ben Roberts-Smith VC ...with a 3D video of him signing the bonnet in a memory module that plays 24/7 in the lunar powered-holographic-screen-insert of the gearstick knob... would still not be worth as much as a new Land Rover vehicle, imho.
It'd be a very cool collectable however.

The seat -I presume is in the centre. So the weapon bracketry is out and the baby is in. A tad of contrast in that :)
We need a photo of that I think, make love not war.
We put our child safety seats on the other side of the GS bulkhead, in the rear tub, so the twins faced the tailgate and waved at traffic behind. From 1 til 5yrs.
We originally tried one toddler seat in the centre seat but it was proved a bad move (as my wife had predicted) and they did not have the required motivation or skill to be substitute drink holders. We had to find another solution and ended up with them on the side window sills.
Not the babies, the drink holders. :)

I'll work on the photo, would love to see the twins in reverse....
For my drink holder I have about a 80mm length of 100mm poly pipe with an end cap screwed to the dash.
You can probably tell I'm a no thrills kinda guy. Except the baby seat that is safty first when it comes to her....

Hey guys - how did you do the anchor point etc for the toddler seat in the centre seat? Looking at doing this myself with my first little one due soon! (Well it will be a little while before he's big enough for perentie trips). I also can't seem to get my hands on a centre seat anywhere.
What did I do to my perentie recently? Added the RFSV bar, turbo charged the motor and converted the rear drums to discs. Also started on a home job rear fitout. Really needs a big draw I've found.

The turbo was put in by KLR so looks much the same as many photos already on here - goes great - big difference - new exhaust looks the business - I can't really see the need to go intercooler and more boost given how much pull it already has.

Just bought what used to be 50-218. Aside from the matt black paint job, she's pretty much as the day she left military service.
Things I have learned thus far:
1. I need to buy ear plugs and learn sign language (as my girlfriend says, this is the car I should have bought in the dying days of my marriage when I didn't want to have a conversation on a road trip).
2. Always check the parking space for fluid leakage before parking there (someone lost a fair bit of coolant, hopefully not me).
3. With roof luggage rack, she's taller than two metres (I now know which parts of Southland car park I can't use).
4. I love the old girl, even though i've had her two days and only done 100km.

Hootchie setup on 50-257 using the FFR sugar scoops and some 2.4m oak dowel. The hootchie is 4.5m x 4.5m Sil-nylon.
First time I have used it. Typical foggy morning. Next time I will turn it 45deg to a diamond shape and have more rear overhang. The idea is to double insulate in cold nights as well as have more room if its a case of camping with rain that hangs around all day.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/02/677.jpg
edit. the sugar scoop hole is about 90mm in diameter. The dowel is 22mm or so. What to do? I didn't have much time but I think I got lucky with the first thing I saw in the plastic plumbing section at Bunnings - white poly drains (you probably have one in your shower floor), the inlet hole (top) is 80mm (the octagonal edge covers the 90mm hole easily), with a internal taper shape down to 50mm outlet - its a cone shape. I painted them OD so no one would flog them as they are outrageous at $5 each. Maybe insulating neoprene roll or something else from a construction site skip would do the job as well or better. nb, the 2.4m dowels travel horizontally, 2 each side of the canopy rails, from the rear hoop to the gal section above the doors, held with cable ties. Also, the tops of the dowels got some padding gaffed on to prevent damage to the Sil nylon.

Took my boy [and the RFSV] for a drive along Stockton beach and back yesterday, managed to get bogged [mostly on purpose] so we got to use the MaxTrax for the first time which worked perfectly. On the way back we stopped to help a Ranger recover another Ranger which was sitting on it's sidesteps, had a blast although I'd be tempted to go lower than the 20PSI I was running as the Goodyear HiMilers aren't exactly optimal for sand driving.

I had the Hi Milers down as low as 12psi to get me though the soft stuff, just need to put air back in them as soon as you hit the firm stuff & get above 30km/hr

OK I will start it off with a few pics of my 6x6. Since purchasing it I have done the following to it. Roof mount Red Dot Air con. Insulation and carpet in the cab. Ignition and door locks. CD/radio with bluetooth. Codan 9323 HF. GME 80ch UHF. Locking fuel caps. 300L long range fuel tank under tray along with 85L water tank and 2nd spare. Onboard air system using a twin cyl York aircon compressor and airhose outlets on both sides of the tray just behind the cab. FFR twin battery system with charging from standard 12V alternator via a ignition actuated isolator. Ashcroft 1 piece centre diff cross shaft. Diff ratios changed from 4.7 to 3.54 with Detroit no spins in the rear diffs and a Trutrac with Ashcroft HD 3.5 reverse cut CW&P in the front and hi tough axles all round. Exedy HD clutch, KLR turbo upgrade with a 3" exhaust. Headlight upgrade with relays on both sides. Safari snorkel. Extra power outlets in the cab and rear tray. LED strip lights in the rear. Homemade standard type towbar which allows use of the pintle as well. Freewheeling hubs on rear axle with a separate vacuum switch to engage so that normal CDL on front and intermediate diffs can be actuated on the move without trying to engage the rear drive shaft which is stationary due to the freewheelers and a modification which will prevent the carrier bearing on the 3rd axle drive shaft flogging around should it fail. Still to come is a set of custom side steps and rails but I haven't had time to do them yet - been rebuilding LT95's for a couple of weeks now. 12671612671712671812671912672112672212672312672412672512672612 6727126728126729126731126733

BTW, there may be doubts when looking at the close-up, whether the second plate digit is a 8 or 9.. i.e., 48-749 LR or 49749 LR. Rest easy, 49-749 is a GS with winch. (have AFM photos).

Its an FFR ARN 49-209. Got a busted centre diff I was told. Found it in the back in bits. Apart from some wear it seems to be ok. It would be noisy I would think.
Question...where can I get a copy of the lt95 perentie repair scale and a parts listing. From what ive researched so far the lt95 in the perenties is different to the other lt95s fitted to early rangies and 101fc v8 and 109 st1 v8s. Mine has no thrust washers fitted and there isnt any room to fit them. The little pinion gears have a shoulder in the rear that sits in a sort of internal shell in the centre diff housing. Is this correct? The parts ive seen available seem to list the pinion gears with thrust washers. These wont fit into the inner shell housings. Any info or links to where I can get the proper parts would be great. TIA.

What's busted in the centre diff? The gears are the usual culprit and caused by not locking the centre diff in soft stuff. When a spinning wheel gets grip and the transfer of shock load is too much that is what happens. Post up a few pics of the damage and let me have a look. I might be able to help you out with some bits.

Ok thanks Bearman. Ive taken pics this morning of the parts and you can see the wear points on the "shell halves". The side gears and pinions and x shafts look good. It seems that the wear is just in these two halves. Are these avsilable new or really good second hand? Any help would really be apreciated. Thanks.

I dont know anything about what the actual problem was with the diff as it was pulled apart when i got it. The inside of the transfer case is clean and no damage either. The only other thing of note is the pto is missing for the winch and it would appear the shaft is broken or been cut off just rear of the engune. There are two u joints and a shaft then the shaft has the break just after the second joint next to the engine. No pics just yet. Im using a friends wifi at his house...lol

Interesting Rod, That is not the standard centre diff out of a perentie or county box. It is a LSD centre diff from a very early range rover. That is what the round discs are. From what I have heard over the years they were not a success and used to give a shuddering when differentiating. I have a recoed one of them here but have never been game to put it in and try it. I would be replacing it with the proper one and depending how much offroad work you do upgrading the cross shafts to a 1 piece ashcroft or jacmac shaft. Much stronger. A good centre diff is going to cost about $600 and add an extra 200 if you want the upgraded cross shaft assembly. I can help you out either way - The LSD one owes me $650....Brian

Do you have a diagram of how the whole thing goes together? As ive said its in a million bits in a cardboard box atm and i have no idea how it goes together.
Cheers and thanks again for the help.

No problem, Unfortunately I don't have an assembly diagram but it looks like it would be reasonably easy to reassemble as long as all the bits are there. I had never even seen one until a couple of years ago until I bought the one I have advertised on ebay UK. If you decide to get the one off me you could pull it apart and see how it all fits together. My guess is the one you have has wear in the discs and probably slips there. That small amount of wear on the casing shell wouldn't give a drive problem in my opinion.

Good chat with Brian today. Seems that ive definatly got a V8 RR early box and its not too good. After some advise and great info from Brian ive sorta found out my probs with this centre diff. This muggins didnt press the bearing on far enough onto the centre diff casing. It would seem that the press tool I used bottomed out on the centre diff casing b4 the bearing bottomed out. Bugger. The workshop is closed today so cant fix it till tomorrow. Glad I found the prob thanks to Brian and now will be able to sort it quicker. Would still like to put proper perentie box with pto for front winch back into it. Anyone got a good one going cheap? Im not a rich man...lol

I'm the previous owner of that perentie and fitted the hardtop which came off a 93 defender 2 door model - IMHO best option for fitting hardtop but difficult to find - had to remove roll-bars. I hadn't painted it camo to match the rest of vehicle.

Cheers, Paul

Hi All,
Just got back from an 11 day trip up to Quobba and Gnaraloo Stations with my wife and our dog, Shell. Clocked up over 3000kms with a quick look at Exmouth on the way home. The RFSV didn't miss a beat. Returned around 12.5 litres per 100kms towing my No5 trailer for most of those kms. The No5 with roof top tent bolted on to it was awesome. Such a cheap simple setup that allowed us to set up a good base camp and then head out each day in the RFSV to have a look around the Stations. The North West of WA is a truly special place and this time of year the weather is what I consider perfect. A few images from our trip below.
Regards Warrick.

Nice one. I have to get to Geraldton one day to see the Sydney memorial. My uncle was on it when she went down in 1941.

on the beach Cape San Blas Florida. I must say, I'm really happy with the purchase. Truck has performed well in the month since it arrived. I've put around 1200 miles on it. Only issues were a loose passenger side mirror (repaired), Tyres required balancing (vibration at 55MPH) and the canvas ripped over the driver's side on the first highway trip (temp repair with 2 yards of canvas duck and contact cement, holding well. Added a removable platform in the cargo area to accommodate a foam mattress. Removed the 24vdc cabling, power distribution box and associated batteries. First camping trip coming this weekend in Florida.

I still have a few bits and pieces to add to it, but it's most of the way to where I've wanted it. Next up is some repairs, a paint refresh and possibly a complete colour change.

Ye Olde FFR is undergoing a bit of a mechanical, body and paint refresh at the moment because she's a bit rough.
