Hi guys,
thanks to bee uteys help I managed to extract the twin tanks from under the disco I'm currently wrecking and sent them off with the 86 rangie for the install. Problem is the tanks are about 60mm too long to fit between cross members of the rangie, has anyone overcome this problem? Looks like it would require some serious fabrication.
If it's not possible I have found a couple of in date tanks from other vehicles, one unknown but right size, the other I think is from a hi ace van, that will fit behind the back seat. How compatible are tanks from other vehicles? What sort of things should I look at that may affect the installation. Any help appreciated as I'm running out of rebate time.
Cheers, Pete.

Huh? to the bolded bit.
You need to cut and bend up the flat section that normally holds up the rear of the petrol tank. Then the tanks will fit longways just like in the D1. The chassis is basically the same apart from the petrol tank mountings. You can't fit the tanks crossways. You will have to make a new mounting at the rear of the tank cradle to bolt onto the rear chassis cross rail.
As for compatibility, gas tanks can't tell what kind of vehicle they're fitted to. If they physically fit and are legally fastened to the vehicle then they should work. Sometimes the contents gauges on the tanks are incompatible and the dash gauge won't work.

Thanks bee utey, worked out the gauges bit. As for the tanks, the installer actually called me in to have a look. He had them the right way but swore they wouldn't fit and it did appear that way without the fabrication you mentioned. But when I mentioned any cutting he was reluctant. I'll go and have another word with him tomorrow before looking at other tanks. Thanks again for your advice.
Cheers, Pete.

This is how my 1989 wreck was converted:

Mounting lip folded up, new holes drilled down low on the chassis. Bolts were inserted from the rear through slightly larger holes under the rail. This was an engineered kit.
