View Full Version : Kaymar bar and trailer mode

Hi guys

I just had a kaymar bar fitted. I went to tow a trailer and I don't get the flashing green light on the dash anymore and the reverse sensors don't switch off when reversing with the trailer.

How do they wire the bars? Should trailer mode still work? Might just be that it is an old trailer...

Cheers

Did you check the trailer lights work? They might not have plugged the loom back in?

Didn't happen to fit LED lights to the trailer in the mean time?

Are we missing data here ? Was the offending trailer used previously without issues ?

The kaymar bar has LEDs. The trailer I have used before with success and all the lights (standard bulbs) work fine.

I'm wondering if the kaymar bar means trailer mode is lost - can someone with a kaymar bar confirm or deny?

cheers

I have a Kaymar bar (was on the car when I bought it) and Lights work fine on the bar 9as you would expect.

The trailer lights have some issues if the Trailer lights are LEDS which is the case with my boat trailer - Have fitted relays to the trailer to stop the flickering of the indicators (only) all other lights on the trailer are plug and play.

On the occasion that I have used a normal trailer (hire car trailer with normal bulbs) the lights worked according to expectations.

I hope you can sort out the problem - I wouldn't assume the fitters would need to remove the standard fittings for the trailer as the bar seems to fit over the top of the existing plugs and trailer security hitch ring?

Can't think of anything else to add

iI'd be looking to see if they have bumped or pulled the wires on the trailer plug when they installed the bar, take it back, tell them it's not wired properly as the car doesn't recognise the trailer is connected.

I have Karmar bar fitted when we bought the D3 and the installer disconected the loom for the sensors but when we plug the van in it shows the trailer connected .(normal lights not LED )

There is no issue here. Indicator relays are load sensitive in two ways; if there is more load resistance (i.e. Bulb out) than expected (within a tolerance) the indicators will flash double pace. Not relevant to this scenario. The second load sensitivity is less load resistance (I.e. more bulbs), which triggers the trailer light. Occasionally the trailer light is activated by the extra indicators on some bullbars, for example.

What has happened here is that by replacing conventional bulbs with LEDs (which barely register as a load to the flasher), you've tricked it into still thinking it only has the normal compliment of indicators even when the trailer is attached.

If you care sufficiently, you can hook up the old indicators to operate as well as those in the bar, but it isn't a serious problem.

Are you sure? The trailer loom come from a separate ecu

Ahh, never mind me then. I'll load my archaic knowledge back onto the horse and cart and head back to the Defender forum where I belong :) Along the way I'll ponder why the hell trailer lights need an ecu...

What I said sure sounds like the problem to me though.
