Does anybody know what the box or baffles are for on the intake duct ? . Mine have rotted away at the bottom probably from not having a heat shield on that side . I was thinking about cuttting these off close to the main duct then plasic welding the holes up . Other options are to buy a second hand of ebay or fit a piecce of pipe with silicon pipe joiners.

I thinks it's a resonator box. I can't see it doing any harm by removing it but replacement ducting would be readily available from the eBay wreckers.

I also think it's a resonator box to reduce air intake noise.

Hi

According to this they do a little more than just dampen noise

I took the factory intake out of a Subaru impreza, it had a box and a tube for resonance. I stuff on that link all sounds legit to me, but I suspect most people take them off in conjunction with an air filter change, which would more than offset any potential loss. My Subaru made the most annoying air-whine at idle without the resonators, under load it was fine, probably too high frequency to hear. And no, it didn't have a canon exhaust!

Thinking out loud, I was thinking an inter cooler might dampen this rough air perhaps, but it occurs to me that the resonators in subarus are on the inlet side of the filter, so maybe not. What side is this one on out of interest?

On the P38 they are on the clean air side.
