Hi All!

I was tanking up two weeks ago and after it was done I proceeded to close the cap and didn't hear the traditional click-click-click then took off the cap then proceeded to tighten the cap again, no click-click-click. So I decided to try and lock it anyway then when I tried to pull out the key, the whole lock assembly came off with the key and it looked really rusty. So I put it back so it wouldn't be obvious that the tank wasn't locked. I asked around the local LR parts suppliers and was offered one for a TD5, will this work with my 2011 2.4 Puma?

At first I thought it wouldn't but after browsing on line for replacements, I came across the Mudstuff UK one with the tether. It says it can be used with 2.2 and 2.4 Pumas as well as TD5s. So does this mean I can use the TD5 cap offered to me?

Thanks.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for the reply. So I guess the TD5 cap offered to me is also good then?

Will give the guy another ring and see how much he wants for it. :)

I ended up squirting some Lanotec into my lock as it started to jam up.

I was actually advised to get one with no lock on it, as it can let water into your tank,.
With all the problems I've had, I'm seriously considering it.

Thanks for the confirmation ozy013, I'll give the parts guy a call and see if it's still available then.

Hi Chops, unfortunately for me, the entire lock assembly came out with the key. I just did what I could to stuff it all back so it'll at least look secure. :D Based on the looks of the cap, I don't see where it can let water in through the lock, maybe I'll have another look.

So now we've determined that the TD5 cap will work with the 2.4 and 2.2 Puma, how do we prevent such instances from happening again? Will squirting machine or silicon oil help any? I mean, mine is a MY11 so it's only been around for a few years so I don't see why it should look like that.

What y'all think?

I replaced the fuel cap on my puma with a new one from supercrap auto.
It is yellow tho. But I have a defendoor so you only see the yellow cap when I fill up at the servo or when I lose the the defendoor.
Supercrap also sell non locking ones.

Hi troppojon, I don't think I have one of those branches here. :)

Hi Nugget, thanks for the tip. I actually ordered the new cap from the UK and should already be making it's way here. Prices are WAY more reasonable on that side of the pond for the same stuff! I just wanted to know my options in the event I needed one again in a hurry.

As for locking cap maintenance, do I even bother or is it another thing we have to accept as a "Land Rover thing"?

HC,
you have to remember that things like fuel caps etc aren't made by LR, they are just supplied by some company who probably supplies a heap of other vehicle companies as well,, such as Tojo's etc.

Hi All!

I thought that I'd update this little adventure with recent events. So I finally get the replacement cap from LR Parts from the UK about 2 weeks ago and it fits right in and locks as normal. Last weekend, I had to tank up for a long trip and proceeded to unlock the cap and turn and turn and turn and turn... It wouldn't come off! After some pulling while turning, the gall durned thing came off but left the threaded part inside the filler neck! Fortunately, it came out easily enough by hand and proceeded to fill up. While filling I had to put the darned thing back together again and did so hoping I had the parts back in their proper order.

Well, I'm about to tank up again soon and thought I'd see if I'd resolved the issue, well, I unlocked then turned and turned and turned and turned. DOH! No joy, it looks like I'll have to strong arm it again. Shot an email to LR Parts and they will replace it for free and send it with my next order as I was gonna get some parts from them anyways.

I'm thinking, should I just the more expensive Mudstuff UK one and hopefully have no more woes with it?

For the meantime, I'm contemplating giving the Deefer some rest and drive around in the H*L** for now. What y'all think?

Thanks.

Hi All!

Just to update all y'all, since I couldn't stand the idea of using a defective fuel filler cap & for convenience and sanity's sake, I went ahead and bought the one for the TD5 that was offered me before. It's a Britpart so I guess when the other one arrives from the UK, at least I have a spare just in case. But so far, the new cap works a treat! *Knock on Wood!*

I took a look at the plastic the defective one came in and it's from Allmakes. Hmm... Are their parts dodgy or was it just the luck of the draw? The reason I ask is that I'll be getting a filter kit (to zero my service intervals) from one of the local guys and it's from Allmakes. I do plan on changing them out every 10,000 KMs so there's that.

The Britpart cap feels more natural than the previous Allmakes one which was a bit "tight" and didn't really feel right when you were turning it. I guess Chops was onto something with his post?

Yeah the area for water to leak , is through the area the key inserts: hence the need for defendor caps.

I go with the non locking ones. Supercheap sell them and I also got one from UK genuine LR
( don't ask why I keep needing to replace them..)
