I'm sure it's not just me, but I find the sound a car makes is very important almost more important than looks, for example I can overlook certain ugly yank tanks because they sound so mean.
Anyway I thought I would share my favourite sounding exhaust note
It's a BRM 1.5 litre supercharged V16. Very interesting car (doesn't look half bad either).

There's a YouTube audio link
(You will probably want to upgrade your speakers as they won't go loud enough)
Feel free to better that sound.

XW / XY GT Falcon with a cam and a decent exhaust system. Heard a classic one driving past me in Fremantle on Sunday. Sounds better than a Dunnydoor any day of the week (sorry Mick). :p
But there's not much can beat the sound of an Aston Martin V8 when someone is giving it a few berries. ;)
A regular visitor to our office also has an AMG Merc V8 that sounds nice when he boots it up Stirling Highway (not as good as an Aston though). :D

I couple of years ago I was once stopped for a random breath test by a lone copper in the middle of the Kiewa valley.
I pulled up and of course left the D2 idling. First thing he said was - "nice sounding truck" !
So according to him the winner is a TD5 with no cat and a 3" exhaust !

An old Alfa GP car from the pre-post war era.
Straight eight, supercharged, 1.5 litres.
It screamed.
Heard it at the Oz GP in ('91 or '92?) when it was circulating with the W155 Merc that Fangio was piloting (and crashed !)
The fuel that Merc used was the best smelling toxic substance I've inhaled :D
Jean Gooses XJS Jag at Bathurst ('83 or '84) sounded fantastic too. Twin pipes so it sounded like a stereo straight six calico rip until it hit about 7000RPM where it then changed to a classic V12 scream
The TWR cars that came in following years just plain hurt as well as sounding blaah with their quad exhausts.

And that's coming from someone that used to run a 300Tdi with an uncorked 3" pipe !

Clearly your exhaust bearing was on the way out :D
But absolutely - the drone on the highway is pretty amazing, but that's why I love it! It's the opposite end of elegant.
The same mates of mine that love how their 2.8 patrols note & whistle are the same ones that fall into despair when their foot wells get moist.
Unrefined beauty is where its at for me with the Defender at least. It would be completely out of place on a BMW but when your best view of the world is mud and you can't see the pedals for water it fits perfectly.

Well, if we can count boats, try the MTU series 538, fitted to the Fremantle patrol boats. 3,200 SHP, 2,400KW. I've never seen a better engine. Typical German efficiency, every major maintenance routine had it's own boxed tool kit. Each spanner shaped to fit. And it sounded as it looked, awesome!. Bob

I've had the aural pleasure of hearing an Audi R8 V10 at full noise zoom past me on the M1 motorway, as well as part of the local Audi roadshow. It has to be heard.

That is a Detroit Diesel two stroke making the noise in that Scammell. Either the Scam had too much pudden on or is geared too high if that Detroit couldn't lift it easily up that little bitty grade.

Many years ago we had a V8/92 detriot deisel as a Gen- Set in one of our trawlers, ran at 1500 RPM, when the governer failed and the engine overran, think it was doing 5000RPM when we bolted out of the engineroom and arrived on deck to see the exhaust system glowing orange, was one of the best sounds from a V8 i have heard, The BANG that followed wasnt.
In a car it would be any V8 with a good twin system exhaust. I must say the ford XR-XY 351 is a sweet sound.

There should be at least 3 overspeed controls on the Woodward governor on a 92.
first being the hydraulic pressure controlling fuel rack and switching the solenoid on the blower flap.
second being the interrupter on there flywheel closing down the fuel solenoid
third being the flyweight governor closing down the fuel rack
all of those must have failed.....knowing the flap was disconnected
I don't know how one can tell lies to the other.
Brian, you may know but my recall is a Woodward EGB2P governor , which should over ride any overspeed of about 15%
I can recall setting them up on generators and the full power start up would throw them momentarily into overspeed with a whoof from the flap closing and immediate shutdown.
One could go on for hours about setting up multiple gensets and synchronising them.

There was a show called "Coltrane's Planes and Automobiles" a while back, and Robbie Coltrane compared the appeal of the sound of a jet with the sound of a piston-engined aircraft. He sat in a chair with some judge's placards. A jet flew over and he scored it very low; then a Spit went past and he gave it a "10".

A Rover v8 with free flowing exhaust....they put out way more noise than a small v8 should. I know a bloke with a custom exhaust shop..lots of American muscle cars there at any given time. He does fantastic work and cant get over the sound the rover alloy motors make when freed up. Aside from that big block chevy v8s in ski boats and hemi 245 and 265.
