Hi Guys,

I got the discovery 3 with the 7 speaker system and was wondering at what position should the ignition be to use the radio for a drive in theatre experience. Will the 7 speaker system drain the battery off?

Hi.

There have been previous posts about this sort of thing and from what I recall, the system will shutdown after 10 minutes? to conserve the battery as you're not simply turning on the radio but the whole system - maybe it was a D4 thing only. IIRC the best solution apart from running the engine was to take a portable radio with you.

Try searching the forum for more info.

Doesn't the vehicle let you run the radio for a certain period without the ignition on??

As the D3 is key operated, does it have an accessory position??

In my RRS - D3 equivalent - with key out of the ignition the radio is off, key in the ignition but off the radio goes for about 10 minutes then turns off, with the ignition turned to accessory the radio stays on.

It should be the same for a D3.

Another reason I wish the D4 had a key :p

Hi Martin, did search through the forum but cud not get any info so started this thread. My bad if I had missed previous threads.

Did see that the D3 has the accessory position and the radio runs on it. Will test it to see if it stands for the entire 3 hour movie. If not, there is always RACQ to call for help.

Thanks Guys.

With the D4 you just turn the radio on by pressing the radio switch. The rest of the system stays off so no need for the key! The D3 looks a bit more conventional.

Thanks Bob. I didn't pick that up from the previous threads that I had seen a while ago, hence the advice about a portable radio. I must admit I thought it was a backward step not to have an accessory position so to speak in the D4. I'll give it a try. I certainly would prefer to have the HK 11 speaker sound to listen to a movie rather than a portable that's for sure:D

Hi 4evershiva.

No problem about previous threads - I thought it may have helped that's all that's why I mentioned it. I've searched for threads too without success. You'll only get a hit if you've used the same words/phrase in a thread. Computers aren't as smart as us as they must have exact matches whereas we can see something not quite exactly the same and make a connection.

D3/RRS does the same but I do not know if it stays on or switches itself off after a while.

I only thing I can offer is put the kids under a blanket in the back on the way in so you don't have to pay for them:wasntme:

I'm not sure how long the radio stays on either but mine has never turned off while I have been listening to it. It even stays on when you lock the car if you turn it on manually but I assume it would go off after a few minutes when the car shuts itself down.

Going to the Yatala drives??

I could be wrong, but I think the radio in my My14 turns off after 10 mins or thereabouts, even if it's turned on via the on/off switch.

D4 radio turns itself off after about 10 minutes, even when turned on with the on/off switch after the rest of the vehicle is shut down.

You can turn the radio back on as many times as you like, but will still shut down after about 10 minutes or so every time. ;)

Went to the Yatala drive in a few weeks ago in the D4. Radio would turn off every 10 mins. Kept switching back on, until we got a warning that the battery was going to go flat. A bit of a shame, because the Disco is perfect for that sort of thing...

Maybe - but the OP has a D3 not a D4.

I get it once, then it won't come back on until the engine is started. If I'm lucky I get 10 minutes, but on occasions as soon as I turn the radio on, it comes up with the 3 minute warning (even thought the battery is at full charge). Completely random....

Yep, going to Yatala drive in for the 7pm show of Transformers on Friday the 4th of July.

I would think 'just' having a drive in to go to, would be a novel idea.

You could always venture out of the shire and go to Blacktown drive in :)

If there is one thing that I find pretty useless in my car, it is the DVD player. If the wheels are turning the screen goes blank. If the car is parked, the system turns off after 10 minutes. So the only way to watch a movie is to leave the engine running and stay put. ( or restart the sound system every ten minutes until the low battery alert comes on.)

Who at Land Rover came up with that? :wasntme:

With my D3 and then D4, I found that the only way to overcome this was to take a portable radio and connect it to my second battery via an invertor.
Still had full volts in my cranking battery to start and drive home.

Maybe a battery powered portable radio. Heaps of good tradie ones out there now.

Cheers, Craig

Yeah it is pretty useless but on long trips I sometimes play a DVD and just listen to the sound track. Sort of like an audio book. As mentioned, drive and the screen blanks but the sound keeps going. Stop and the screen comes back on.

I'm surprised that no one has yet suggested folding the seats all down and a comfy mattress installed in the back with a couple of doonas...:wasntme:
