Awesome footage, what sort of horsepower are we talking in that set up? And what sort of grade do you think that climb is?

There is another video kicking around on You-tube that has an enormous freight train being hauled by 7 locos.

I have some videos taken in the 80s and 90s and the trains were often 4x4 and 6x4 ( 6 locos at the head and 4 locos mid train ) but the info for that specific train in the YouTube video above states the train is 1.3 miles long or just over 2 kms long.

They are about to begin an upgrade project that will see an increase from 35 x 8,000 foot trains to 50 x 8,000 foot trains A DAY or on average, one train every 15 minutes.

That’s 14,000 containers a day.

I will get there one of these days.

There are three major continental crossings in Southern California, this one, Donner Pass and by far the most spectacular, the Feather River Route.

Do a google search for Feather River Railroad and for a real eye opener, for the KADDIE WYE.

The Kaddie Wye is a huge “Y” shaped twin steel trestle bridge.

this link should wet your appetite.

If you did something like this with your model train set, it probably would, but the sheer weight of the train keeps it on the track.

Hi,
That is an impressively steady camera shot.
Cheers

Probably something like a DJI Phantom 3 or 4 drone - my mate flys these semi professionally - they take amazing video. Once you have it parked where you want it, it won't move. It's like taking video off a fixed camera platform.

Thanks for posting these Tim, they are quite spectacular clips.

You would be aware no doubt that we have a couple of ascending/descending loops in NSW but our trains are nowhere as long but containers are lighter ?

While it is permissable to head up to 4 locos here it would be most unusual for it to occur, as it would probably go beyond the capacity of the draw gear, even banking the 10000 tonne 82 wagon trains at Ardglen is done 3 head 3 banking (a total of 24000-27000 hp depending on locos used - sounds good)

They can be snapped.

This youtube of the border loop would be much better with a camera drone - I'll have to save up :)

Hi 87County, I have hours of video taken at and around Border Loop. Even had permission to go onto the property to take video, but, as you posted, a single arial clip would do it far more justice than all my hours of videos combined can do.

What do you make of this one for multiple units? Admittedly 48s aren't going to break drawbar gear but I'm pretty sure they were all on line.
