View Full Version : Dinged my sill. Options?

Gday all,
I dinged the passenger side sill on my 90 the other day, and am looking for the most cost effective way to repair it.
The budget won't stretch to rock sliders at the moment and most of them seem to mount below the sill anyway.
I was thinking of some chequer plate in black powder coat might be the cheapest and best looking option. Any suggestions on the best place to get them?
Thanks in advance,
James

Ouch. But the ding does add character... ;)
Maybe skip the chequer plate and wait until you can put the sliders in.
Saves paying twice to change the same part of your truck.
PS: How / what did you hit it on? That's an interesting spot to collect a ding.

I have several battle scars on my 100". I bought it pre-dinged.
Adds character.
I reckon you should do nothing until it comes time to move it on.

Well.... I was parking out near hill end on a very steep piece of mountain, and I put the front wheel up against a triangular rock with the front face almost vertical, about two feet high figuring that there is no way it would roll away.
Then when I got back into the truck I stuck it in gear and let out the clutch. Be damned if the thing didn't climb straight up it in less than a second, over the top and dropped down the other side. It came off slightly off centre and just caught the sill.
Basically I significantly underestimated the 90's ability to climb straight up....

Re moving it on.... I don't plan to. This was a long term commitment. Short of major mechanical problems (a year in and so far so good) or a crash I plan on being buried in it.

Rock sliders do replace the sill. If they don't they are side steps.
Rock sliders probably wont cost much more than the cost of a replacement, respray followed by another ding.
The cheap option is checker plate.

Its a 10inch orion goto dobsonian. Its actually my daughters scope. Beautiful clear skies... I like the deep sky objects, but she prefer to stay within the solar system and view jupiter, saturn and especially the moon.

I would take the sill off, put it on a timber beam and gently caress it back into shape with my foot. Problem solved in about 15 minutes.

I had buggered sills on the 110 - I just put cheq plate over it after bashing it into shape. Cost me 50odd from UK. Then again, I had the benefit of placing cheq all over the vehicle so it does not look out of place.

Just leave it - sills on a Deefer are a cosmetic bolt on.
Save your pennies for some sills - or buy some straight sills off someone who has fitted sliders if you have to do something in the interim.

You cant see it from where you're sitting , don't worry about it.
Pretty cars are for the benefit of the outside observer , you spend your money making your car look good for the benefit of others who bother to look at you , if they bother at all.

I'm going to make up something very similar to these. Dings will not stand a chance.
Home made rocksliders - Land Rover Zone (http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/home-made-rocksliders-57629.html)
Would be relatively cheap compared to purchased ones, and relatively simple to make.
Ideally mine will likely have some barwork welded to the RHS, for something to step up onto.
Not sure how structural the rear pipe outrigger on the 90 is though? I'd be wanting to use the Hi-Lift on the sliders.

I agree with Dervish , take the sill off , It will come off fairly easy , put It on something flat , a bit of timber use another bit of timber 4x2 and bang It back into shape , you will never get It perfect , but so what It's a Land Rover , When I brought mine 110 " second hand " It had dings all over the passenger door , I was told a calf put It's head through a fence and rubbed It's horns on the door , there still there It doesn't bother me one bit , It always makes for a good story , when having a chat with other Defender owners !!.. cheers Jim :)

Either leave it as-is, or borrow a welder, learn how to weld and make yourself some sliders. Less than $50 in materials for a D90.

Shame it's a 90, I've got left and right sills, with black checker plate sitting in the shed, from when I fitted Mulgo's sliders to the SVX.

I got my chequerplate from firsrtfouroffroad, they have a good range, for a 110 sills were 65 pounds plus freight. Or locally expedition centre (Mulgo)
